The bottom of this rapidfire rusted out right where the handle connects to the chimney, which allowed the hot coals to fall through a big Ol'fire breathing gap.

Fortunately when I flipped the fire grate over I bent the tabs. That made the chimney so it can never come completely apart and the grate cant fall out the bottom if its over heated...like hell fire overheated. It lights easier too since the charcoal is closer to the flame if your using pube cubes or propane.

Once I started jostling it around to fix it the top rivet gave out...

The fire grate is the only thing holding the chimney together in this pic.

Here I took the handle off the heat shield and bent the shield a little to match the chimney. Then screwed it on 180* backwards. Weber sold this accessory with replacement parts already attached.

Ground the screws off short so they dont block any air flow.

Started reattaching the handle with new bolts.

That should hold it together a couple more days.

Are you an engineer or something? The stuff you rig up is amazing, and your ability to reuse what most would throw away...
Still need a 22" yellow

Been there. I drilled out what was left of a couple rivets and bolted the top together. Top gave out in mine. I've got big holes rusted out on the sides but it's still together so will keep it in service as long as I possibly can. Nice work on yours.

I bought a new one but now I have two functional chimneys. That's more fun than one

Just dont leave them outside and you eliminate the rusting. The ones I bought new have no rust because I bring them inside, the ones that come with the kettles I aquire I hit with a wire brush, round it out, clean the handle they're back in business. Throw that bad boy away and get a new one.

I went out to my garage and got distracted away from working on a fire grate for this, but I did work on something really cool...

It held together but it didn't get hot enough. My IR was only about 900* when I dumped it.
