I've never used the storage bin for coal. I keep paper towels, lighters, temp gauges, scrapers, lighter cubes, 409 cleaner, hot gloves, and back up newspaper in mine. Another reason the cover comes off the performer no matter what cooker I'm using for the cook.

this new performer is the 1st one I've had with the bin. so far I've used it for my mitts ( welding gloves ) & grill cleaning tools. it looks to me like charcoal would tend to get damp if the grill is outside.

I've got one that sits on my patio with no cover and I've never had a problem with it getting damp. Although like Darko said, it don't last long.

In my case, Charcoal lasts about a week...It don't last long enough to get damp. Others use may vary.

I just brought home a good one open range smoker. the guy I bought it from also threw 200-250#'s of lump charcoal. that should last me a week......

We have had 8.53 inches of rain so far this season (Starting in Oct).

Today, I found the ash bucket attached to my performer completely full of water.
I had put the cover on with no lid for a day or two (I loaned the lid to another kettle that was under a covered porch).
Without the lid, some rain had pooled on the cover over the bowl, and some must have leaked into the bowl filling the ash bucket.
Likely the cover would not have leaked if the lid was in place.
This is a 2016 performer with a non-weber cover.

The open bag of Stubbs stored in the charcoal bin was fine (dry), I used it to cook my lunch today.

My bin stays dry with and without the cover.  I've never had issues with damp coal.

I have bags of charcoal squirreled away in the garage and the ones I can't fit in there are outside in plastic garbage cans with lids.  I have not noticed any difference in the light or burn rate between the two storage methods.

Me either. I wet it down with charcoal lighter and set fire to it. My performer sets out in the rain with it's bin full of oak chunks. They are always good and dry and I have had lots of heavy rain here. I never cover my outside grills, but I do remove the ash pan. Wet ash is a grill's worst enemy.
