About what year is this SJ
« on: October 09, 2016, 06:28:38 PM »
Found this SJ in my area for sale. Really good price. Box is still sealed. Guy won't open it send me more pictures. I don't know much about SJs, I believe it's from the 80's, but does anyone have a better idea?

Looks like at least 1982. but could be later.  Depends on the vent code.

If the item looks like the box photo (pretty likely) then, yeah, early to mid 80's....see here, not quite halfway down~~>

1buckie, I saw that the code matched up to the 3 wheeler which would be awesome, but the picture on the box shows a single vent with ash pan. Either way I want it.

The SJ database is off slightly... 10001 code stayed with the blaik SJ after they went to the single vent bowl, "loop" legs. I've been trying to track down when the code changed... haven't had time to really dig into it yet.  Here's a box from 1997 (and wow! a really big picture!), showing the same code:

OK, it's either 1982 or 1983. at least 82 because of the copyright date, at the latest 83 because the address is Arlington Heights.  In 84 Weber moved to Palatine.

Definitely grab it!

Based on my SJ collection and @Darko 's comment, that is most likely an E-code (1983).

This is the box from my E-code which matches what you found:

This is the box from my G-code:

My understanding is that there are no D-codes (1982).  C-code SJs have the earlier wire legs so this one must be an E based on the Arlington Heights stamp and the boxes above.

@Bob BQ It looks like the model number definitely changed by G, and maybe on F. F would make sense if they changed the box as the same time as the move from Arlington Heights to Palatine.  F was also the transition from black legs to chrome.

...and the mystery deepens, @Neil_VT00 . Not disputing what you're saying by any stretch of the imagination. But why do they still have the 10001 code on the latest style (as illustrated in the 1997 box on my last post).

To muddy the waters even more, here's a pic I held onto from an ebay auction that ended 3 weeks ago. The seller's description states:

Weber Smokey Joe
Model # 10001
There is a "10001 Black" sticker over another model # 50012 Black. Not sure why.
Color - Black
Condition - New in Unopened box

I'm wondering if they changed the model number to 50012 in 1983, with the new single vent/legs, and then... changed their mind?

@Craig , have you delved into this at all?

@iCARRY That's what I love about this place.  So much great info/history.  Most importantly, is the grill in your trunk yet?

@Bob BQ Pretty interesting info.  From your post it seems like the box pic you found would be an F. Any pics of the actual grill? I'm curious if the legs are black or chrome.

Putting all of that info together:
SJ-100 - Early models, prior to A-Code (1979 catalog shows model number 10001).
#10001 - A-Code through E-Code
#10001 / 50012 - F-Code (being a transition year)
#50012 - G-Code through sometime before M-Code
#10020 - Any idea when that started to be used?

At some point it looks like Weber reverted back from #50012 to #10001.  Here is an example of an M-Code(1990) box that it labeled #10001.  I have a picture of an N-Code(1991) which is the same box and N was the last year of the loop legs but do not have the angle to see the number.
