SS Performer Transport
« on: March 27, 2013, 04:39:53 PM »
Any advice on how to safely transport a SS performer?  If things come through, it would be transported about 1 hour on a 75mph highway in the back of a truck. Just wanted to make sure I was prepared if everything works out. Need baby home safe with no damage!

I use tie straps. You might also consider zip ties for the small stuff

It might be easiest and simplest to put the lid and the coal bin in the cab, or tied down in the bed.  Maybe some blankets to wrap that stuff up.  If you do that, you might be able to just lay the thing down in the bed for more stability.  And make sure you have a strap to hold down the hinged lid so that doesn't take off on you.  If the tank is missing, make sure you have some string or rope to keep the regulator from flopping around too much.

Good luck on closing up the deal, and we hope to congratulate you soon on your new SS!  They are truly a thing of beauty, the height of the Weber art.

IT'S RED?!?!?!?

Forget everything I said.  Rent a U-Haul and several hundred blankets to wrap it in.  Then have a friend drive while you ride in the back to make sure it's safe.

Tie/tape everything loose so it cannot move. Put what fits in the cab. Consider taking back roads on the return trip to keep speed down. Wind resistance varies with the cube of speed so even dropping 10-15 mph makes a pretty big difference.

Take the lid off so it doesn't get chipped, bring it inside the truck with you.  Take out the charcoal and cooking grate, leave them in the bed of the truck.  Lock the wheels if possible.  Remove the ash catcher so it doesn't jiggle around.  That bracket holding it on might be pretty worn...don't want to make it worse.  Lastly, bungee it down or get some racheting straps and secure it good!

Bring some tape to make sure the SS lid does not fly up.  Noticed they doped their price finally .  Did you get a deal ???

I put mine inside an SUV.  The lid fell off on the way home inside the car.

Do you need me to send a lowball offer to insure you get the Performer ?

I had planned on paying the 130 anyways but after I saw the drop to 90 I was on it. I already got setup with an address and time for Friday so hopefully things should be fine. Now to thin my herd this weekend on CL.

And thanks for the tips yall.

Something tells me that Mike's desire for a red ss has hit terminal!

Great score.   take everything off that you can and put in cab and strap the s*&t out of everything left.  I usually strap it down to the box and to the cab so no chance for movement.
