I have a dilemma. A few months back I obtained a blue OTG online with the plan to clean it and flip it.

The paint has a few rough spots like many colored kettles do.

It has been listed online for quite a while with a few nibbles but no bites and the peak selling season has come and gone.

I also have been dying to custom paint a kettle for a project i've had in mind for a year or two.  The project would not be blue.

Is it a sin against all things weber to paint over a colored kettle? I hoped to sell this one find a rough black kettle to use as the base for my project but it simply hasn't worked out that way.

Am I wasting my time and energy trying to sell the rough blue and find a black when I can paint what I have without further effort?

Dude, it's your cooker!  You don't need anybody's permission or validation to try a new project.  Give it a go - in the very worst case what's going to happen?  You're out a few bucks and a little time?   What do you stand to gain in the best case?  A 100% custom kettle like nobody else has?  Sounds like a manageable risk to me...

Wellllll, I say spend $20 and find a black OTS for your project.

Yes, repainting a color- especially one no longer used- is a mortal sin.  :)

Find a Black. The paint is gonna likely change where it gets the hottest so be prepared to have it do this by having whats underneath Black not Blue.

1) Cardinal sin

2) Put the blue up for auction and move on

Where is it listed? Have you tried listing it here? I agree with DarrenC, but if we're mine, I would totally go the black route.

I remember it now. I have a black ots sitting around, but I bet shipping cost wouldn't be worthwhile for a trade.

Its your grill do with it what you want. Me personally, I wouldn't paint that one, it looks like its in good condition. I would hold off till a cheap black one came along. The grilling season will end soon and several black ones will be available.

I just picked up my first Red, she has a few battle scars, but she is Red and she is going to cook some real good food as soon as I finish the restore.

the grilling season ends? who knew.....

For civilians it does :)

Be grateful. Without their seasonal buying habits. there would be no seasonal close out and clearance sales that many of us get to capitalize on.
