If the kettle is a cooker I don't bother with scraping the interior down to porcelain. I will hose off the ash and loose grime with a hose, soak it it oven cleaner and let it sit for a bit. Scrape the inside with a putty knife, hose off the interior, then wash it with soap and water. I don't do this too often either.

Many years ago during a particularly active competition season I actually thought it would be a good idea to take my way-too-grungy WSMs to the car wash and use the pressure washer on them...that ballistic stream hit the bottom bowl and in a matter of seconds had me awash with a tsunami of the foulest wet ash slop you can imagine.  I had to strip down to my skivvies right there in the bay before I could even get back in the car to drive home.
That's a funny story. You're lucky a couple kids weren't riding by on their bicycles. That would be my luck
