Menards has a 22 inch stainless grate for 25 bucks that I use. Had to get it shipped site to store but it's identical to the factory grate just made out of stainless. Can't get a link to show up but just search stainless steel grate and they have them for 22 and 18 inch kettles.

Since it sounded too good to be true, I wrote to Weber and they replied

Question - since magnets stick to some stainless, how can  we tell if the grate is plated or stainless, other than writing to the manufacturer?

SS tends to have more of a matte sheen to it, not so much chrome-like. Somebody here posted a comparison photo.

Also, thin and cheap SS isn't all that good if it's more fragile. There's a place out of Nolansville, TN that makes one from 304 SS for $65 but it's not hinged.
It's the iconic symbol for the backyard. It's family/friends, food and fun. What more do you need to feel everything [is] going to be all right. As long as we can still have a BBQ in our backyard, the world seems a bit of a better place. At least for that moment. -reillyranch

Here is my comparison photo and the previous thread on SS grates. The SS grate is the lower one in the picture and the plated GBS is the shiny, top pictured one.
