Wow, when the travel fatigue wears off, you've got to share more.  Beat up but cool and its a RED Wood Dale!

That should be a fun restore and a great cooker. How'd you find it?

Looks as though it was fired on from above. Possibly strafed by a P-51 Mustang? I love the patina these well used kettles have.  Wish they could talk.

Well played Sir. I am scrolling through your pics hoping to see a metal top handle at the end and you did not let me down.

Thanks, all.

The simple story- saw it listed on CL, a week old ad. Figured it was sold. Left a message, got a call the next morning. The seller said he was told by someone (a grillfella, I assume) that he should ask for more than $50 and that some guys would pay big bucks to have it shipped.

So I explained the phenomenon of Weberitis, said I was afflicted, and that I'd be happy to drive the 4.5 hours this very morning to grab it. He then said what the hell, if you're gonna come all this way, you can have it for $40. I said thank you very much sir and hit the road a couple hours later.

Interestingly, both my Wood Dales are from beautiful upstate NY!

I see that Red still listed on CL in Falmouth, did you inquire about that one?
