My first 70's vintage Score.

I got lucky and picked this up yesterday.  1979 A-code faded black MBH.

Sellers ad. and description

Large Weber charcoal bbq on wheels, very good clean condition, hardly used. Comes with a new bag of Match Light Kingsford Charcoal, a partial bag of hickory flavour chips, a package of bbq wipes and a new cover. Great to keep as a spare for when you have a crowd! $25.00 for all.

I recommend hitting the handle with 0000 steel wool, then tung oil. Then a couple 3 coats of spar varnish.  It will look nice.
Should tighten up if it's not too loose.

How will varnish tighten it up? You mean by soaking in the rivets kind of?

I have one that's loose as well, reason I ask.

2 rivets on the handle needs to be somehow tighten up, replaced or have top and bottom wood sections glued together.

It is about 1or 2mm play and I  could live with it for now but I want to fix this along with few other things. 

I will take your recommendation on finishing the wood.

@Travis , maybe "tighten up" was the wrong choice of words.  Sorry, man.

When I rescued a A code blackie 3 years ago, the handle moved around some, and the top and bottom would move independently,
but based on the description above, not nearly as bad.  When I applied the spar, the two pieces stuck together, and they no longer move.

@greenweb , as far as I know, there is no way to tighten the actual rivets.  Maybe a time for a 2-rivet Zavandle.

Thanks! I was going to use your suggestion , but no real gap between two pieces to glue.   On a closer inspection, it looks like I need to shim between the wood and the metal portion.

Sweet score!  What did you do with the Match Light? 

Thanks!  It will be used to burn-in the kettle.  I won't use it for cooking food.  One time with other kettle score,  I got whole bunch of free old charcoals that smelled moldy.  I did not even use it for burning in. I ended up trashing it all.

With KKB as cheap as it is on sale, I wouldn't even use the Match Light to burn it in.  Might end up tainting the kettle, and possibly future cooks, with a petroleum smell.  I'd trash it or give it to someone who doesn't know any better.
