Black Patent # MBH Clean Up
« on: April 17, 2016, 11:21:11 AM »
Picked up this guy over the Winter and finally had the chance to clean it up today! It was in pretty rough shape. It had paint splattered all over it, and the lid handle was bent, but I knew it had potential...

Before shots

After shots

I am very happy how it turned out.  ;D It's actually really still black for it's age and barely faded at all. There are no dings/dents or paint chips on the lid or bowl. There are only a few slight scrapes on the lid, but very very minor. The weird thing is, the bowl is a bit more faded than the lid, which doesn't really make sense? I sanded down the handle and re-stained it but it turned out a little darker then I wanted, but that's ok. Based on the vent, I believe it to be between 1971-1975?  ???

Gorgeous grill.
I think those black MBH kettles with just a slight orange peel to the finish are the finest grills Weber ever created.
Your guess on the vintage is reasonable.
I've got Webers. 10 - WSMs, 5 - 22.5" kettles, 2 - 18.5" kettle, 2 - SJS, 2 - SJP, 4 - WGA, 1 vintage Coolie Pan

Looks great.

It's possible the lid and bowl are from too different grills. I had one  where the bottoms was more faded than the lid and I eventually learned that they were from two different grills.

Sweet black!! Your estimate on age is pretty close. Bowl vents being the dual large tabs, most likely favors the tail end of 1974 through 1975.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! @Harbormaster , I agree, the MBH grills with the orange peel finish are by far my favorite. I have a red MBH with that finish too. They just seem more solid for some reason?
