I want to get one and was wondering if I should just get the regular Amerex/Kidde or if there was another one that you would recommend. Anyone here has the (dis)pleasure of using one in an emergency?

Lawrence, what/where do you want one for?
The Kidde extinguisher that is commonly sold at hardware stores is a good extinguisher for around the house or garage.
It is rated 2A10B:C. The dry chemical powder that it uses is corrosive.
A bunch of black kettles

I have used a few in training. What is it for? Whole house? Kitchen and grilling?

Just for around the house or in the garage or both. I guess my use cases would be charcoal fire gone wild, grease fire in the kitchen, or chemical fire in/near the garage. I do a decent amount of stuff that use fire, flame, or sparks and would rather be prepared. Guess that mindset comes along with getting older. I'm looking primarily at a 5lb, maybe supplemented by a 2.5lb. One of the Amazon reviews for a 2.5lb recommended avoiding extinguishers with plastic components- I thought that was sound advice.

Fwiw, I'll also be getting fire extinguisher training at work.

Costco usually has done good deals in store on ABC extinguishers.

Remember a fire needs oxygen to be alive. Smother it and it's out. Just like our kettles.

I'll be perfectly honest, we have Amerex fire suppression systems on the transit busses we work on here in Seattle, and I've had to clean that shit up when they go off and it ain't no fun-that shit is nasty and there is no way I that gets near any of my cookers.

PNWBA rules require an ABC fire extinguisher to compete. they are inspected yearly. Most everyone gets the Costco ones around here.
I cook on: Backwoods Gater, Lang 36, Hunsaker Smokers, Pellet Pro 22" WSM, BGE's, WSM's, Cajun Bandits, PK Grills, Drum Smokers, Genesis Silver C, Weber Q's, Cookshack 008, Little Chief, La Caja China #2, Lodge Sportsman...oh yeah! Weber Kettles! Kamado restoration and pit modification hack!
