Does anyone know how to get the rust off a cast iron grate

wire brush and elbow grease.

If that wont do it, wire wheel in a drill.

If it's bad, try electrolysis

If it is not too bad soaking in vinegar will remove rust. Probably not the easiest method for a large odd shaped item, though.
