Just got a quote for powder coating, only local company I could find....$300....need to get it standing again, and examine the bowl closely to see if it will be worth investing that much.
May be a paint job, with good paint through a spray gun

It stands!!!..well for a few minutes.
The front socket was rusted loose on 2 sides, so i actually cut it completely out to have it welded like the other 2....that's stainless sheet metal..probably 14ga. Inside..the thumb screw holes are off because i didn't explain that to my welder, but it's ok. And I'm not sure the wheels are original as the vents aren't.

IT'S ALIVE!!!...well almost.

More to come later. At this moment, I'm leaning hard toward painting it Satin Black. Kinda blend in with the dings and gouges. I can always repaint it or decide to Powder Coat it. Right now I'm leary of powder coating becuase they have to blast it first  and with the rust that's there....scary...

Wow! That is one huge grill! The size doesn't really hit you until compared to a 22.

You could cut out the bottom of a 22" & use it for a vortex on a ranch.LOL

Love the leg socket fix. That photo will go a long way in explaining it to my buddy, who will be welding one for an 18 I have. The comparison shot of the ranch and the 22 is cool as well...wow!

does anyone know what size and type of wheel should be on this? The wheels on it are 8" wheels, but it has a slight tilt to the front. may just be old legs, but I was thinking of buying some retro looking wheels and wanted to make sure 8" was what I needed

The wheels that are on it are the correct ones (they are 8").  The reason it tilts forward is that the front leg is worn down from being dragged around, and is probably shorter that it started out.  That is an easy fix - just cut a new front leg.


If you want to go with custom wheels, you can get any size you want - you just need to cut a new front leg to the corresponding length.  10 or 12" wheels on the back will require a longer front leg.

That is looking great...I like the way it looks right now, but agree it would look sharp with a new paint job.  Only question I have is, if you did a new paint job on the bowl, wouldn't the high heat ruin it over time as it does on smaller kettles?
