I have the opportunity to buy either a 2nd or a 3rd gen Performer for about $200. My question is, is the 2nd generation better for any reason than the 3rd gen? Both have gas assist, and generally the exact same layout except for the thermometer. Any help would be greatly appreciated! My decision will be largely on condition.

If I remember correctly the thermometer on the newer ones is a lot more accurate.

Really not much difference at all other than what you mentioned. Depending where you are located you can prob find one for a bit less than 2 bills... Unless it's a color you really want then go for it :)

The 2nd gen. has the SS front panel. It looks nice. Where are you located?

The 2nd Gen, as well as the 1st Gen, allows you to remove the thermo and poke the meat ...
Q: How do you know something is bull$h!t?
A: When you are not allowed to question it.

I would buy the one in the best condition, or a color I liked if they are different. The thermometers are not very accurate on either one so that wouldn't be a factor to me.

Also the plastic tables get weak after many years in the weather. So maybe the newer one is better? I have seen many with cracked tables. I bought a black one for $25 with a cracked table. If I need to lift the castor side to move it over a bumpy area,  I made it a habit to grab the metal front legs when picking it up instead of lifting it from the front edge of the plastic table.

$200 is too much for me unless it was a color I really liked and was in great condition. I have seen many deals for less than $100, so don't buy the first one you see.

Why by one when you can buy two for twice the price?

Really comes down to personal preference based on looks, or if one of them is in better shape than the other.  Be sure to look at conditions of the charcoal and cook grates.    Al lthat said, I'm with Harley in that $200 is too much to pay.
