I asked him the same thing!  "Only when the kids wanted to". He followed the instructions and put sand in the bowl.

There's a NIB one here in the sf bay area on CL. $100. It's tempting. I offered $80 and he said no.

Yours is really nice. Mine is a little beat up but works great. The top does a really good job of deflecting heat out towards bodies.

I just got one today and it's quite different. The legs and center ring uprights are steel painted black not galvanized like yours. They also don't turn out at the top to hold the lid, they are built into the lid
