A very nice '98 SSP ( pics)
« on: May 15, 2015, 11:03:19 AM »
A pretty good acquisition week continues. On Monday I found a 3-yr old, little-used 22.5 WSM and a Maroon 2010 Platinum (sans bale).

Picked up a classic (imo) this a.m., from its original owner, whose wife's desire for the speed of a gasser was the reason he sold it. Thank you, wifey!!

This EZ SSP is solid, has minor surface rust in a couple spots and the finish still shines. The handle and vent knob look nearly untouched. The casters move freely.

I smell gas when the valve is open and the igniter pops but it doesn't light. A quick look underneath seemed to show the wires intact. I'll get after it tonight.

This is SSP #4 and is the nicest by far. l'll probably thin the SSP herd.... :-\

Anyway, here it is as it came to me-

Congratulations. That performer is in excellent shape. The performer igniter fix is pretty easy. just make sure that the tube is clear of cobwebs/ash, and take some sandpaper/emery board to give the igniter a clean tip surface to spark.

DO LIKE.
It's the iconic symbol for the backyard. It's family/friends, food and fun. What more do you need to feel everything [is] going to be all right. As long as we can still have a BBQ in our backyard, the world seems a bit of a better place. At least for that moment. -reillyranch

Thanks all.

My first SSP, a 10-yr old DT at the time, had the classic spider blockage...I stuck a piece of wire in there and a pretty good size fella ran out. I was psyched, cuz the previous owner said the ignitor hadn't worked in years.

On another SSP, one of the wires had come loose is all. Again, the previous owner said it hadn't worked forever.  ;D

Great shape, and you've got everything there, even the match holder and tank-filler fitting.  And if you don't already have a pair, you are gonna love those charcoal baskets!  Congrats.

Well, so far it's gas-assist 1, me 0!  :)

I pulled the assembly out and apart for a good cleaning, no go. I switched the button w/ a known working one, no go. I switched the ceramic piece w/ a working one, still no go.

Don't know what else is left...the tube is fine and clean as can be. All tips are clean. All connecting/ground pieces have been cleaned. It lights fine and flames great via match.

Any ideas, other than buying one?  >:(

Turn everything off.....wait a few.....turn on the main tank & wait a few......then allow the gas feed & hit the start button.......

Not positive this will help, but I found some info on propane that said if the main tank line is not pressurized to a certain point, the safety feature built into the tank 'senses' that there's a leak in the line & automatically drops the feed or pressure of gas so you don't have tons spurting out all over (in case of fire, say)

It could possibly be this if you've done all these other things......most likely the next step would be a replcement regulator, I believe some will say.....

Yes, as it still lets some gas thru, even in 'safety' mode......you will get a flame, but it won't be a real strong shooting flame......

Only takes a few minutes to check to see if it's that, before you start buying parts......

Still no go. The good news is I'm within 10 miles of 2 True Values that have the kit in stock for $14. I guess I should swap out a regulator first, just to be sure.

make sure the inside of the tube isnt corroded. It won't spark if it is.
