I buy that stuff when it is on sale too. Pretty clean for lump, but I have had a few foreign objects in the bags.
A bunch of black kettles

I find RO Lump to contain higher amounts of coal, rocks, metal and uncarbonized wood. That being said...if I find it on sale then sifting this crap out still leaves me with a good deal on some pretty fine charcoal that burns hot. That and hands in need of cleaning.

I mostly use Traders Joes Briquettes but its only available seasonally here so I do also use Royal Oak and im pretty happy with it.
Home Depot has it as well but in larger bags. I just checked local current prices:

Store             Price    Pounds   $ per Lb
Home Depot    $13.97    17.63    $0.79
Walmart            $6.58      8.80        $0.75

The made in the US Royal Oak is good stuff.  For grilling lump is my go to choice, for smoking I'll use briquettes but something like Stubbs instead of KBB.  I would say US Made Royal Oak is pretty damn good, not as good as Wicked Good Lump, but still a damn solid choice and a steal at 7 bucks.

I really like the Royal Oak Lump.  I bought a bunch of the big bags (18 pounders I think) for $8 at Walmart last year.  I've used it in my Kettles and it does a great job.  I think it burns a little hotter and quicker than Kingsford but it has a great smell and creates some really nice flavor.  But I actually don't use it much on my kettles.  I use it more for my (one non-Weber) Grill Dome Kamdao.  With the air control on that grill I can do 14 hour cooks with just a few pounds of lump.

An interesting note, Royal Oak makes the Big Green Egg brand lump which is 2 to 3 times the price.  There's a really good review on ths charcoal at http://www.nakedwhiz.com/lumpdatabase/lumpbag11.htm

Check it out.

I use that stuff all the time. I agree with what everyone else says..burns hotter and cleaner. Way less ash in the end.

I think you're in for a treat. I really like RO, but I also use my fair share of KBB. I guess I just use what I can find the deal on throughout the year. I enjoy the predictability and repeated results of KBB. But I enjoy the flavor of RO

It sparks like crazy. The big bags are not the same as the small so if anyone tries to tell you it's not that bad, they are probably used to the little bags.  but at that price I'll deal with it. (I stocked up too)

This is a nice Briquette from RO:

I think my Hd has it 5.99 for a 16LB bag.
