The best thing for any Weber ash-sweep would be to keep it relatively dry and ash-free. Use it as you normally would, but don't let the kettle sit outside full of ash in the rain. Wet ash is a very "basic" compound (acidity scale) and will begin to corrode the metal.
It also wouldn't hurt to put a dab of "anti-seize" on the thumbscrew before you install it.
If you follow these general steps, the ash-sweep should last for many, many years.
