I've recently purchased a new 7409.

Is there anything I can do to extend its useful service life?

Oil or protect somehow?

Replace thumbscrew with stainless?

Periodic clean and inspect (spring and fall?)

Keep out of rain?

How long do these typically last?

Thanks, Pete

The best thing for any Weber ash-sweep would be to keep it relatively dry and ash-free.  Use it as you normally would, but don't let the kettle sit outside full of ash in the rain.  Wet ash is a very "basic" compound (acidity scale) and will begin to corrode the metal.

It also wouldn't hurt to put a dab of "anti-seize" on the thumbscrew before you install it.

If you follow these general steps, the ash-sweep should last for many, many years.
Interested in ANY offset handle SJs you may have.

I don't think I would use any oven cleaner on it, may erode the blade, not sure of it but I think it will.
I am not a collector, but I do have a small collection.

I've heard folks recommending the replacement of the thumbscrew with stainless, and also periodically loosening and tightening it to keep corrosion from forming on the threads.
One of the charcoal people.

Thanks. I think, importantly, I'll try to keep an eye on it. Maybe an oil every season.
