Boy Scout Peach Cobbler
« on: August 15, 2014, 04:55:34 PM »
Thanks FEDEX

Could not resist when my visiting (25 year old) daughter asked for peach cobbler.  Fond memories of camp fires.

1 box cheap moist yellow cake mix
1 large can of peach slices
Season with cinnamon, butter, and sugar in the raw (on top the last 20 minutes)  The Sugar in the Raw added a nice crunchy texture to the upper crust... :D

45 minutes later add Blue Bell Vanilla and serve.

This old boy scout recipe is one of the reasons I'm on the Homeland (In)Security watch list.

Ooooh man! Brings back memories for me. I'm an Eagle Scout and there was nothing like Dutch oven cobbler and Dutch oven pizza. Now I need to try the dutch oven in one of my kettles. Looks awesome!!

Craig,

Gotta love the dutch oven! This one is a 25+ year old cast iron Lodge 12" turtle.

Turtle:
Flanged lid holds coals/briquettes.
Legs on bottom allow Dutch Oven to be put in fire.
Bail handle for use with tripod.
Flip lid to use as griddle.

It's seen enough use to qualify for the Cooking merit badge multiple times!

When the apocalypse comes, you can find me in Northern New Mexico in the Pinon Pines with my dutch oven.  This Eagle Scout can survive...with style.

Is there a backpackable Weber?

I haven't tried but I bet a Weber Go Anywhere would fit. Or take a 70s-early 80s smokey Joe with the fold up legs... I'd make  it work.

My education is not complete.  I must learn how to make charcoal in a survival situation... ::)

Could someone please enlighten me. Do you mix the cake mix with the peaches and all the other ingredients? Or is it just layered in the DO?
If it breathes, we can cook it!

Jocool,

At the campground, I spoon the peach slices into a well seasoned oven.  Combine the cake mix (as much as possible) in the can of juice  before adding it.  Add the cinnamon and stir the whole mess.  Butter and Sugar in the Raw on top. Cover and cook.

If you think the oven is not well seasoned, butter the inside preheated oven to prevent sticking.  Squeeze butter works fine too.  To preheat, put it on the fire for 10-15 minutes to warm the oven.

John Ragsdale, in "Dutch Oven Cooking,"  suggests 6-7 coals underneath and 15-18 on top for good baking heat.  That's a good number to start with, outside temperature and altitude permitting.

Definitely brings back Boy Scout memories. You can make a lot of great stuff in a Dutch oven. Nice to know some other Eagle Scouts in the WKC. You don't run into many these days.

My Pleasure.  Made it again for my birthday party on Monday.  Beats the hell out of BD cake.
