E code - leg socket nipples?
« on: July 28, 2014, 11:10:08 PM »
I've been working the last week or two on an E code restoration.
I noticed immediately that the legs on this guy were stubborn - very stubborn.
Even more stubborn than some of the old thumbscrew legs that I've worked with.

I tried an array of chemicals but they only acquired a millimeter of wiggle room.
I eventually got them out by wrapping a thick layer of masking tape around the base and clamping on with a pair of vice grips. (and even then it took two people and a lot of muscle)

Tonight, the legs are cleaned and polished and the bowl is touched up and ready to rock.
Guess what - The F'in legs won't go in.

After further inspection, I found that the leg sockets have a pimple, and each leg has a tiny dent for the pimple to fit in.
I don't recall ever noticing this. Is this a manufacturing fluke - or a short lived feature? (Or is it there on modern kettles and I'm just sleep deprived and/or mentally challenged?)

Most kettles sockets I have seen have that protusion that dents the kettle. I bet it's even part of the kettle leg patent.

Nipple or pimple?  There is a difference.

I think all post thumbscrew sockets have the pimple/nipple.

I'll have to check some of mine when I get a chance... I do know that legs tend to "mold" themselves to the socket they live in. So when one gets shipped to me I have to make sure the "correct" wheel leg goes into the socket it had been living in. Unless it's caddywampus then I DGAS... It goes into the correct assembly.

i am pretty sure my J code red and my new(ish) 26 doesn't have - but maybe they're just not as big?

This E code i'm working on is stubborn. Putting the legs back in is a lot of work :\
