@jcnaz, could you please measure how far down from the bowl's rim you drilled?

That is very smart mod. I like it!  Hogsy's mod looks good too.

Nice job!

@jcnaz I am inspired by your build and want to do the same with a twist.  I have taken an 18.5 OTS and coverted it to an OTG.  I want to add the lid bail just as you did.  Would really appreciate the dimensions for the holes as well.  Thank you!

@cwmfour, I'm in the same boat as you; converting an OTS to an OTG and wanted to add the lid bail and tuck and carry handle from my JJ, only to discover the handle shape is different.  I think I'll have to first order a tuck and carry handle from Brian and then proceed with adding the lid bale mod.

@Mr.CPHo  I have a JJ as well and lid bales are a different shape because the bowl is a different shape.  The JJ has a sharper "angle" than a normal 18.5 kettle.  I am waiting on a tuck and carry wood handle from Brian too.

I think you can bend the JJ lid bale to work.  The major difference is the angle on the short pieces that go into the holes.  On the JJ they are angles up and the on the original Smokey Joe Premium bale they are almost at a 90 degree angle.  The rest of the bale is pretty close.

I will take a picture tonight of the two bales overlaid so you can see how much it needs to be bent to work.

@Mr.CPHo you could also just order the correct profile bale from ereplacements.

That's what I did.  I will still post pics in case you want to bend the JJ bale.

Thank you very much, @cwmfour.  I think I'll order the part you linked; for $5.72 I'll save myself a bunch of time and curse words!

Okay, guys, here is a picture of the lid lock hole that I drilled in my 18.5" kettle, with a tape measure. I also took a picture of the  lid lock on the 18.5" Outrider that I used to have. I did not have the,Outrider yet when I built this kettle, so I had to use my best guess as to where to drill. The Outrider's hole placement would have worked better.

My mod:

@jcnaz with the current setup on the 18.5 lid bale is it pretty tight?  On my JJ and my SJG I have to pull up slightly to clip the bale onto the handle.

Should I set the hole lower than what you are showing?  Thanks so much for the info!

@Mr.CPHo here are the comparisons of the lid bales. JJ bale has the more acute angle.  SJP is almost a 90 degree.

Mr.CPHo

@cwmfour, I'm really glad you pointed out the differences in lid bale shapes.  I'm definitely going to order one instead of using JJ's.

You betcha.  I was in the same situation.  I was going to try to reuse a JJ bale until I saw this thread.  Post some pictures when you are done with the mod.
