Spirit of '76 - One Proud Brownie
« on: June 23, 2014, 02:18:28 AM »
I know, I know - it's not a blackie, but when you see a brownie this nice, resistance is futile. This one showed up at the Mid Atlantic meetup, and I managed to trade a few things for it with my SIL. Minor cleanup done. She's a beaut!

Love kettle reflections!

Handle is in good shape, but I was surprised to find it was not riveted. It has little threaded inserts in the lower section, and two screws up top. Definitely factory-made. Is this a common variation of the two-rivet design?

Might be my favorite vent design, and it matches my other '76/'77.

Of course, the reason I wanted this color kettle was to show off my NIB kabob set. (Thanks to Jeff!)

Those skewer handles with the black ring and brown fade lid are a match made in heaven.

Now that's one proud Brownie!

Ready for action. Yes, I will use this setup on special occasions.

So black is beautiful, but this gorgeous Weber kettle has earned its place in the family.

That is tremendous MArty.  You are right that the kabob ring looks neat with the brownie.

Nice one for sure! The kebab skewers are to die for.. I would really like to see more pics of that handle set up. I've never seen that before. I am a bit suspect. You sure its not someones ingenious set up?

Will take it apart and do some detail photos. It's definitely a factory job. Stay tuned.

Edit: OK, here's the detail shot. Seems like a round deep threaded insert. If not factory, someone went to a lot of trouble.

Will take a closer look when I have more time. Could be a small nut pushed in there, but it looks round at first glance. Maybe someone filed off the edges? Either way, it works quite well.

" Is this a common variation of the two-rivet design? "

Uncommon, but for Marty, it fits right in.......what would you think, he would have an "ordinary" Brown kettle?

I have an 18 with double screw handles.....it's original that way.......might have been their 1st thought as to how to do up the handle attachment before the rocket scientists came up with rivets...........

Marty, that's one sharp ass kettle.......perfect fit with the skewer ring......cooking anything soon?

Marty, took mine apart & it's basically the same, but no nut, rounded or otherwise in the bottom half......just stub-headed screws into the wood, but the holes do go all the way thru........looks just like what you have.............

Then, the thought occurs, MAYBE these are an original manufacture replacement handle?

Mine's "C" code 18.5

I was thinking original replacement too.  If that is true it would be awesome to find one of those NOS in the original packaging.
