Soaking Grates
« on: June 06, 2014, 04:46:39 PM »
I just started using a 24" diameter, plastic hot water heater catch pan for a soak basin.
Home Depot $9.98 + 1" PVC plug or you could valve it and connect to a hose drain.
Works great for up to 22.5" grates.

It works great.  I have the same one, but never posted a photo.  Nice work!
I've always had gas...  And now a bunch of kettles because of this place.  Thanks!

Same here, but I have a bigger one for the 26. I also have an insert for half whiskey barrel that's a little deeper - about 6" and holds 22" grates. Closest I could find is this: http://www.amazon.com/Real-Wood-Products-10800-Discontinued/dp/B000A0HGZC/ref=pd_sim_sbs_lg_3

kettles, smokers...

Yep, Home Depot had a 26" version of mine as well.
Perfect solution for soaking grates.

I've been looking for something like this! My mini kiddie pool finally broke.
NYC Kettle Hunter (where <30 min drives do not exist)

What do you guys soak your grates in? And for how long?

Sent from another Galaxy using mental telepathy.

If it breathes, we can cook it!

Most of the time I use warm water and dish detergent.
Soak time might be an hour to several hours depending.

For nasty stuff I use oven cleaner and this plastic pan should be non-reactive and fine with it.
I screwed up the other day and ruined a nice aluminum pot with oven cleaner.
Caustic stuff !
