BGE and "Flashback" burping?
« on: April 20, 2014, 10:15:43 PM »
So I admit I have a thing for kamados but I just learned about "flashback". Apparently if you are cooking at high heat and open the lid too fast, a burst of flame shoots out the edge. Here's a video of it:

W.T.F.?!?!? This doesn't look safe at all. Has this ever happened to anyone in a Weber? Why or why not? To avoid this they recommend cracking the lid a few sec before opening it all the way.

Naked Whiz did a video on this 10 or so years ago.  He did a newer HD version of it.

you have to burp the kamado by lifting the lid about an inch for 10 sec

I would say this person did a dumb thing by cutting off the oxygen completely on a hot fire.  I usually cut off the bottom vent and leave the top cracked to let some air out until the fire is basically out.

Regarding this on a weber, I just don't think they are that air tight for it to happen

I am not a collector, but I do have a small collection.

I just watched the HD version last night.  There is a Char-Griller Akorn with some mods for $200 about an hour from me.  I've been considering it, but am not sure.

I have had a kamado for about for about 9 months and never had the issue, it's called common sense.
