I'm nowhere near there, but am curious if anyone knows what the ring inside the grill is that is under the cooking grate. 

I put a green arrow pointing to it.

Definitely a 18” Weber, likely with a HC 22” IAC.  Must be a helluva serious sear machine.

Didn't consider that because I assumed the coals were placed directly on the ash pan & it looks like there is a coal grate across the top of the ring.  Did the HC ash pans have a grate that fit over the ash pan?  Or is the picture just blurry enough that I'm not seeing it right?

There’s a standard sized charcoal grate that sits on top of the HC pan.

I am very happy to say I was able to make a deal for this one.  I’ve been wanting an 18” red for a while and I cant wait to give it a good home.  This is going to be in the man cave/driveway cooker and I’m keeping my other kettles and gasser in on the back deck.  Can’t to clean this one up!  Thanks for sharing the find stellato!
