Title: Found my holy grail!
Post by: zavod44 on October 06, 2012, 08:37:32 PM
I don't know if ypu know but I love the color yellow, and I have been looking for a yellow grill.  Assuming I would never find one, I almost just resigned myself to never having one.  I actually do have a real beat up yellow lid but no bowl to match.  Well the other day on Craigs list there was a real weird post, it just said Weber Cooker.  I sent an email asking if it was a grill or a  smoker.  The lady responded and said it wasn't a smoker but an old charcoal grill.  Thinking it must be the usual run of the mill black kettle, I asked her what color it was. She responded and said yellow.  I was so excited I didn't even know what to do.  I then called her and asked where she was, it's like 1 1/2 hours from my house.  I couldn't get down there until Saturday, and It was Tuesday!  Then of course I figured one of the guys around here would snipe it before then.  I kept checking the trading post to see if it was listed....but nothing.  Well this morning I picked up my holy grail.  It needs work but it will shine up real nice.  The triangle it trashed, and the front leg socket is broken free in the fro

nt.  I'll be able to repair it no problem.  It was painted yellow somewhere in time, but I'll get that off, I think it actually protected the enamel.  There are some dings but much better than I expected!

Here it is in my truck,  she had a smokey Joe too that was totally shot, the legs rotted right off..

Nice score Brian. :-\

Am I to understand it was painted yellow over the original yellow at one time? ???

Duke.....yea some horrible yellow paint over the yellow enamel.  You can see some runs in the paint if you look close.

Golly, I'm thinking a nice dark walnut handle to make it look totally original, just like in he old catalogs....

Do you guys think these wheels ever had a white wall on them or were they just always black?

Brian

I see they are or at least one still has the whitewalls. Typically they just wear off.

The walnut handle wil look nice against that yellow.

Nice score Brian! Can't wait to see it restored! I love the look of the walnut colored handles especially against reds and yellows. It will look sharp! What do you do to reattach the leg socket? I know some of us have had this question, what's your method?

I paid $35, a lot nicer than the last 18" I saw somewhere elsE   ;).  As far as the leg socket, I am either gonna drill it and put a stainless 6/32 bolt and nut or maybe I was thinking drilling and putting a pop rivet in there.  I'm only worried about the pop rivet because it seems the aluminum rivet might soften up under heat and it won't hold so well after a while.  The nut and bolt would be smaller in size than the rivet.  You really won't see either one, I'll prob have to go with the nut and bolt I can use a lock washer as well to keep it tight.

I've used very small self-tapping sheet metal screws, run into a slightly smaller drilled hole....
Worked pretty good & held real tight for as long as I had the kettle
(No longer own it, or I'd get pics )

Great score.... !!!!!!

Was wondering, for you masters of rehab, how do you deal with the chipped enamel ?

Some kind of hi-test, hi-heat paint, or is there a whole other way to go about it ?
Title: Re: Found my holy grail!
Post by: zavod44 on October 07, 2012, 02:28:56 PM
The chipped enamel is very tough, I have found some paint that will withstand, but the color match thing is difficult.  At this point I just try to get the grills cleaned up as best I can and go from there.  If your gonna make a looker not a cooker then I have a good solution for those grills.  At that point they become yard sculpture, which I'm okay with that too...

Only other one I saw was Jeff's and he has like at least two or three including a ranger, and then some guy in Wisconsin bought some horrible piecE of crap 18" yellow that wasn't worth a dime.  They seem to be pretty tough to find, I feel pretty lucky.

I have my near perfect yellow 22, except fro one quarter size chip on top.
Paid more in gas to get it. Bought from the orignal owner. Paid $9.
I have only seen 1 or 2 for sale in the last 2 years.
Shaun is right, these things can blind you!  8)

What, post up Jim limpet's yellow! I want to see what all the hype is about.

Nice score. The grill gods smiled on ya for posting that article about replacing the two rivet handles. Solve the high heat porc-a-fix color match chip issue and lord knows what you'll get!

Great find...that will shine up nicely once the paint is removed.  Yellows seem to be the hardest color to find, especially ones in good cnodition.  The areas of missing paint are so much more noticable on a light colored grill.  I see one just like it a few miles from me being put into action every now and then.  Some day I'll stop in to see if the owner is willing to sell.  Any idea of the years these were available?

Congrats on the find Brian!  I didn't realize how hard the yellows were to find.  I picked up a 18 yellow for $35.  Is that too much? ;D  Just being a kid, again.   ;)  I attached a link to the pics I have so far.  Enjoy the new grill.

Okay so I had the day off of work and I put some time into the Gourmet today. It proved a little tougher than I had anticipated.  THe paint that was on there had to be real old and crusted on.  It took a lot to get it all off.  First I used lacquer thinner, and it didn't work so well.  Then I went to oven cleaner and that was not doing so well.  The i decided to use heat, that softened the paint and I used an xacto chisel blade and gently scraped the paint off.  I will tell you one thing, if you think the red grills change color you really need to see these yellows.  The turn almost orange, I'll get pictures tomorrow of how orange it turns.  Once I got the paint off the lid and it looked pretty good, I turned to the bowl.  The bowl was a whole other story.  This paint would not come off. I got it hot with a load of coshell and it just barely softened it but it was so thick I could not scrape it.  Then it started turning black, it looked like a real mess.  I finally got some paint stripper and used that.  That worked well.  I took the legs off and got the wheels removed.  It revealed how bad the leg socket was.  One was really loose.  I Ended putting a nut and bolt in it to strengthen it and it worked awesome...

Here is the lid with the paint on it

the lid must have sat somewhere and collected leaves and whirly birds and it was crusted on....

Yea, i tried lacquer thinner, oven cleaner, then goo gone, then paint stripper, and scraped it off with an xacto chisel blade...looks beautiful   ;)  no sweat.  just got to be a little careful with the blade, but the enamel is very durable.

Mini update.....I got the bottom all cleaned up,  here you can see the bolts I added to strengthen the legs.  Not too bad considering the way they were when I started.  They are rock solid now.

I didn't need to do anything to one of the sockets, it was solid....

I cleaned up the wheels.  They are in remarkable shape considering most of the wheels of this style seem to disintegrate pretty easily.  I sprayed armorall on them.  I'll Figure out a way to put the white wall back on there...

Nice job Brian, that's a good way to fix sockets. It looks like it's coming along nicely. I'm glad you didn't have to remove those bottom vents like I did. I got an old one recently where the vents were just caked with grease. They were just left open all the time and just filled up. It was gross!

I never sleep.. I only wish I had more time to spend in my hammock..

Can't you just pour a little white paint int he groove and swirl it around?
Or, here's a thought, get a paint brush..
Or, some white pinstripe tape, nah, too much work..
I'm still going with paint. Maybe yellow in this case.
