Title: colored Kettle, or a faded black?

Any guess as to the age range of this one?  I'm looking for a starter Kettle for a friend, so I'm not too picky about the color or vintage.  But it'd be nice to know if I could easily retrofit an ash can on this.

It would need to be a one touch with the sweeper, not a three wheeler to put a can underneath. Those handles look to be worth a bunch more than ten bucks, that's a deal....

Just heard back.  It's an 'N', so it has the ash sweeper system.  But does anyone know when Weber started aligning their leg sockets such that the ash cans could be installed with those easy snap-in tabs?  I seem to remember my buddy's 'P' Mastertouch having the metal bracket to hold the ash can in place.  Which means I might need to use hose clamps or somesuch to hold the ash can in place.  No big deal.

But again, can someone help this (somewhat) colorblind KettleHead with the color on this one?  Did Weber make a color like this in 1991?  Or is this a black grill, faded to gray?

I'd say faded black by the look of the bowl

Though Weber DID make a light grey kettle in 1991, I say this one is a faded black kettle.

The owner is saying it's gray, but it does look like the bowl is blacker than the lid.  Thanks, everyone!  The expertise around here is amazing!

I think the bowl looks darker due to shadowing.  I have a feeling this one might be grey.

I was thinking gray as well.  For ten bucks who cares, go get it!

Oh, don't worry, I'm getting it!  This mystery needs some resolution.

I have an appointment to pick it up on Wednesday morning, but I might not be able to wait that long.  Maybe I'll see if I can grab it tomorrow.

...and the winner is...

A proper photo makes it completely clear.

Not in too bad of shape.  A little rust around the handles, and the owner painted the wood handles to preserve them, but the grates and everything look original.  Definitely needs a new sweeper (it works, but with great effort).

My friend will love cooking on this and will appreciate the color, but not as much as a collector.  If anyone is looking for a gray N, let me know and I will get this one to you.  I'm not looking to make a bunch of money, just a little for my trouble and for packing and shipping.

Mike, did you sell it or give it to your friend?

You don't see faded black gray OT's very often. I thought the faded ones went out before the three wheel vents. Very odd? AJ has an NIB three wheeler with the bolt on vents that has the non fading material. It just doesn't compute. :-\

I kind of sold it and gave it to a friend, all at the same time.  I cleaned it up, my buddy paid for the replacement parts, and I did all the installation.  He cooked on it for the first time this past weekend, and was thrilled.  But not as thrilled as when Brian's beautiful handles showed up in the mail today.  ;-)

The funny thing is, the same day I delivered it to him I picked up *another* gray one just like it.  Except it's a 'G'.  It's going to another friend of mine-- she just bought her first house which has a little patio out back which is just begging for a grill (or two, or three).

Here's the second gray:  http://weberkettleclub.com/forums/weber-kettles-accessories/my-gray-phase/
