Title: My $10 1988 SJ Find
Post by: Tom C on August 07, 2013, 04:46:19 PM
Found this one on Craigs List for $10. I could use some help with how to restore the handel and ash pan.

Nice find! I'm not sure on the handle but the ash pan will probably come up with some #0000 steel wool.

I use 150 or 200 grit sand paper to remove the greying.  Stain with some Minwax Golden Pecan Stain followed by Minwax Polycrylic clear gloss.  I know most people suggest spar varnish. I am just using what I had in the garage.

Wire wheel on the pan and legs.

LIGHTLY sand the handle and hit it with Watco Teak Oil Finish.

Thanks for the feedback.

I may make a University of Central Florida Knights mini WSM with it.

I agree with using 0000 on all the metal and porcelain surfaces. For the handle, review the long thread on preferred handle finishes that was beat to death a few weeks ago.  ;)
