Title: Vintage weber wok, rust removal and seasoning advice?
Post by: Walchit on November 13, 2020, 11:24:46 AM
Just picked this bad boy up this morning, was thinking about using a wire wheel on a drill to knock the rust off. @ReanimatedRobot  is concerned that the wire may leave some scratches in the surface. What do you guys think? Has anyone done one of these? I searched the forum, but kinda gave up after the first page of results, and figured you guys wanted to see this thing anyway.

You could try 0000 steel wool.  It should not scratch but remove rust.  Sheets of paper towel soaked in evaporust might help.

I do have some of that naval jelly stuff. I was thinking of wiping it down with vinegar. I was just wanting to use the wire wheel because it would be a lot easier, lol

The rust will give the food a nice patina

Congratulations on the pickup

I agree with Michael, although I was thinking vinegar and a more aggressive steel wool. Mine wasn’t quite as rusty.

If you aren’t too hard with the wire wheel, I think it would be OK - a lot faster for sure

Unless you’re gonna hang it up on display, you’ll be seasoning it inside and out anyway

I'm gonna cook on it, I think I have some steel wool with only 3 0's on it lol. I might try that first.

Treat it like carbon steel cookware since that's what it is.

This link lays out several ways of removing rust.

You can use electrolysis to remove the rust. Works great

Well I am pretty impatient and just used this black thing. I think it's for removing paint in auto body work. Gonna hit it a little with the wire wheel, then maybe a light sanding before seasoning it.

The wire wheel wasnt doing much in my test section.

The other one went pretty quick

Yeah I kinda freaked out when I saw the link my buddy sent.
I'm seasoning it now on the 26 per @mr CPHO 's advice.

Fits perfectly.

Got it pretty clean, it definitely has scratches from the polycarbide wheel, so we will see how it turns out.

I used some naval jelly on the brackets

Sliced some pork loin really thin and marinated it all day while I chopped up vegetables for hours. Then it was time to wok it like I talk it.

I'm out of charcoal, and havent gotten the retort finished so I had to improvise

That top chimney gets really hot. Ask me how I know...

Peppers and onions!

Bok choy, carrots, broccoli, snap peas(sliced) and mushrooms.

Added the meat back in, with more liquid aminos, red wine vinegar, and some sesame stir fry sauce I got at the store. I marinated the pork in the same stuff, but with some minced garlic and Worcestershire

I added a pot of rice I cooked too, but I guess I didnt get a picture of that.

Thanks guys! I dont see any of the swirly marks from the polycarbide wheel anymore, I will go out and get a pic. It seemed to get some of the sides all the way seasoned with all that walnut in there. I should have rotated it while I was cooking, but it was dark out there by the time I started cooking. I poured water in it and scraped around in there, then dumped it out and wiped it out with a paper towel. Added more oil, then turned it upside down in the 26 and added more oil to the backside. I need to do a little more research on proper care.

Looks good Andy! Keep using it and the seasoning will protect it from rusting again.
