Title: Performer SS Restoration Question
Post by: Krharney on August 09, 2020, 11:16:58 AM
I am restoring 1999 SS Performer because the bowl has rusted through.  I would like to repaint the frame and fix a small dent in the SS Char Lid.  How do I remove the lid from the top frame?  Also the ash catcher was just wired to the bottom of the kettle.  It doesn't look like there were ever any locking tabs. Did they not have that feature on the first Performer grills that were produced?  Thank you for any help.

The ash ring and bucket was likely the old style that had a bar held in place by the nut attached to the ash sweeps.  Replacing the sweeps without the bar would mean using another method to secure the ring.  All that information is here.

As for the table, there are a lot of SSP restoration threads on this site.  Use the search tool and you will find them. I never had to remove that piece, but I seem to recall there was a metal rod that had to come out in order to pull that piece out.

The charcoal bin hinge rod is what likely has to come out in order to remove the charcoal door/top.  It is part #45 on the schematics

Thank you for the replies. The information really helped. I do have the old ash catcher and it was wired on. I suppose the sweeps were replaced at some point with the newer style that didn't have the bar and thumbscrew.

I will search the site for other restoration posts.

I do like my  SS model better than the new ones.  I like having the bigger propane tank, too.

The SSP is a beautiful grill.  I owned one for 17 yrs.  I wish I could be of more help but I never had to remove st stainless top on mine. There are lots of SSP owners on this site who would be more than willing to share their expertise tho.

There aren't many bolts / screws on the grill. Since you plan on painting the frame, you'll want to tear it down anyways. Just start taking bolts off and writing down where they do or take pictures as you tear it down. I've taken a few apart, but don't remember how exactly the SS lid comes off. I don't recall it being difficult as all.

You might want to get new stainless steel bolts, nuts and washers to use when you put it all back together. THey are all 1/4-20 size, just need to match up the lengths. It's a very common size.

Caveat emptor, if one chooses to remove the bolts that attach the wheel frame to the bottom connectors, one is likely to snap the bolts if they are rusted inside the tube.  If that happens then new star nuts need to go in the bottom connector tubes.  Those parts are not listed in the  assembly guide.  But there are several posts about star nuts on this forum and you can purchase the star nuts online or at a bike shop.
