Title: Alternate chimney starter stands/surfaces?
Post by: DougWilsonsSlapper on June 22, 2020, 04:35:32 PM
My neighbour has been complaining about the smoke coming from the chimney when I light up briquettes and start it on the Kettle grates.

I'd like to move the chimney further away from the house and away from the Kettle.

I generally use the wax starter cubes.

Can I light the chimney on flagstone and just leave it directly on the stone?

Are there chimney stands available?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks to everyone in advance!

Guess he's use to people using gas ques. For me it is what it is. There's smoke while the coals light and if my neighbors don't like it they are free to go inside till its ready.

You could light it in a SJ.

I know.   Our lots here are only 18 feet wide and it's my neighbour on the other side of or semi-detached.

The smoke only lasts 10 minutes.

Just looking for alternatives.

Right.  And move the Smokey Joe away.  That is brilliant!  Perfect.

A different coal might help to. I find that the Weber hardly smokes at all.

Funny, it was the Weber Briquettes I was talking about being really billowy.

Is KBB and Kingsford Professional worse?

The lump that I've used isn't bad at all.

I would start with lighting the chimney on a pizza pan or other metal disk so you can light it anywhere on your property.

Also been trying different charcoals recently, the market is crazy now, so many choices- Jealous Devil definitely does not smoke as much as Webber charcoal. It cook well to but is very $$ pricey

I would continue with the Weber coals and just start my chimney on a Smokey Joe in another part of your yard like others have suggested. Maybe offer up some good barbecue to the neighbor once in awhile and he may not complain about the smoke.

Start smoking cheap cigars outside when he is around or has the windows open.
Pretty soon, he'll stop complaining about the charcoal smoke.

I've been starting my chimney in a SJ bowl for many years.  In addition, about a year ago I started using an empty second chimney stacked on top that speeds up the lighting process.   7 minutes after lighting, I shake the chimney to move the briquettes around (use the motion a Chef does when flipping ingredients in a frying pan). About 1 minute later the briquettes are ready to dump.    8 minutes from lighting to dumping equates to even less smoke.

Looks good!

You using Briquettes?

I rotate between Kingsford blue bag and Weber briquettes depending on the length of the cook. I use Kingsford for short cooks like salmon and sea bass and the Weber briquettes for almost everything else. The start time is the same for both using the double chimney method.  I start mine with a plumbers torch rather than with the Weber cubes.  Takes approx 1 minute to get them lit with the torch.  Adding that 1 minute of torch time the lighting takes a total of 9 minutes.

I agree a SJ is an excellent way to light coals, I've been doing it for years.

Double stacked chimney sounds like a grate idea, I'll be trying it this weekend

I've been setting my chimney on one of these (https://www.homedepot.com/p/7-3-4-in-x-10-3-4-in-x-10-3-4-in-Concrete-Deck-Block-100002709/204827028?MERCH=REC-_-pipsem-_-204230166-_-204827028-_-N) for years to light it.  I finally had to clean off the moss from around the base of the block when I was cleaning up my deck this year, but the block is pretty much indestructible.  You'd probably want to pick through a few in the store and find one that doesn't have any underfilled corners, but they're cheap and foolproof.

Invert an empty metal bucket, stand the chimney on the bottom.

I use a large paver that was extra from a landscaping project.  It’s large and works well.  Very stable.

Fatwood smokes like a mo fo

I light mine on concrete, in the grill, on the grass, in the dirt, wherever it works. A patio stone would be fine. Set the cube down, light it, set the loaded chimney over it.

I just recently tried a bag of Royal Oak lump (NOT briquette) because it was pretty inexpensive. It seemed to be relatively low smoke when lighting, and when I ended up with a face-full of it due to the wind shifting, it wasn't terribly harsh on my eyes. My particular bag had a lot of very small pieces and quite a few big chunks. I'm not sure if that's common (as it was my first try with lump), but the overall experience was good enough that I'll try again. I feel quite the opposite about the Royal Oak briquettes, though...

I've been doing the same thing.  I recently found out it's not a great idea to leave a chimney starting on the outside patio cement.  So I painted a SJ that never gets used and it's job now is chimney chair.

I don't think I would put it directly on the flagstone. I would get a cheap metal pizza pan to put it on. That's what I do. Or a square or round paver. Seems like it would at least darken the flagstone if not crack it
My neighbour has been complaining about the smoke coming from the chimney when I light up briquettes and start it on the Kettle grates.

I'd like to move the chimney further away from the house and away from the Kettle.

I generally use the wax starter cubes.

Can I light the chimney on flagstone and just leave it directly on the stone?

Are there chimney stands available?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks to everyone in advance!

I also enjoy outdoor Dutch oven cooking and when I was just getting started (and quite broke) for my stand to make my ring of coals, I used two cinder blocks turned on their side. The guy at the hardware store, upon learning what I was doing, warned me “they could end up cracking and breaking” and I said for the buck a piece they cost, I’d risk it. That was 10 years ago. I left that set at the house I was renting and bought another set about 7 years later. I still have that set. So rather than risk your patio, I’d recommend a couple cinder blocks.
