Title: replacement for 7409 system
Post by: mikerajar on February 24, 2020, 09:17:35 AM
I need to replace the 7409 ash sweeper for my pre-2000 kettle.  Is the  7444 one-touch system from Amazon (www.amazon.com/dp/B005LVAZ3A/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_.kbvEbM25FC4D ) a good replacement ?

I bought that exact one for my 2006 which had the older style with thumb screw and it worked fine.  I believe there was a tab on the kettle that I had to flatten or remove.  I remember banging on it with a rubber mallet to make it work.  No problems with it so far.

Some modification is typically required.  You might want to do a search to find the part number for the equivalent stainless set, just so you don't have to deal with it again.  I'll try searching for the mod that I thought was the easiest & required the least modification to parts, sometime tonight.

That's all there is any more. I have been working on two different rusted together that I am going to combine to make one hopefully. One was drilled out all the way through and then the other the thumb screw broke off and somebody drilled it out but a little bit off center. I believe I can still thread it and make it work. Does that sound stupid?

I replaced the 7409 with the 7444 without any problem.  I think the only time there is a problem is with an older catcher assembly.  If you are using the ash catcher dish, there should be no problem at all.
