Title: Grill Shack build
Post by: MagnoliaTom on February 11, 2020, 04:19:56 PM
Started building a grill shack today. Got too congested in the back patio so I decided to build a covered structure to house the grills on the deck next to my garage. Used some corrugated metal and some leftover siding I had laying around. Frame is all pressure treated lumber.

Ran out of lumber and daylight. Will finish tomorrow weather permitting.

Finished it up for the most part. Still need to decide what to do with the shiny metal and the wood. Thinking of aging the metal with acid and maybe painting wood to match rest of the house.

I'd leave the metal. Let the weather age it

I think I may do just that. It looks kinda cool now...not sure if it would look as good with me attempting to artificially weather/age it

I think it’s going to come in handy. The nice part is I can move it out of the way since it’s on wheels and put the gasser or the MBH in there.  It’ll also be where I put my pizza oven.

Getting my 26er modified to be easier to move around the shack. Doing a mini ranch.

Going to add a ring of sheet metal to support the lip and fastened to the bowl using the lid bale holes.

Got my mini ranch mostly completed. Just waiting for casters and tube caps to be delivered from amazon. Going to cook on it now![emoji3]

Nice build.  Think you are going to add a handle to the front of the 26er like a ranch?  It works well on a ranch, but I wonder how easy it would slide in and out of a lid bale on a 26er?

If it works well it would be pretty good for your set up as you wouldn't have to reach so much to the back or slide the grill out.  Only problem is there is no going back after drilling the holes in the lid. :/

Maybe another mini rancher owner could chime in.

I haven’t considered adding an extra handle like a real ranch has. The lid is a little big and heavy for easy one hand removal but for now I can manage it just fine. I may end up just wearing gloves to grab the lid by the lip.

Got another accessory to add to the cooking arsenal. Had a local fab shop make me a flat griddle out of 3/16” steel plate. Going to serve double duty as a griddle for the SSP and as a heat deflector on the 26er for slow and low cooks.

Getting it seasoned up now.

@MagnoliaTom How much did that cost you? I want a griddle plate so bad and I really dig that design. Full flat rather than donut shaped is exactly what I'm looking for.

The finished product looks amazing - beautiful! Love the extra workspace too. I'm going to have to ask someone out by my MIL's cottage to fabricate one of those griddle plates for me. That's a perfect design, and I've been searching for something similar that doesn't cost $150.

Thanks! I’m actually thinking of replacing the old SSP cart with some cabinetry on wheels. That way it’ll be at a more comfortable height to work on and I’ll have places to store gloves, thermometers, utensils, etc.
I think it’ll look more like an outside kitchen instead of just a bunch of grills under a roof.

Great idea - although even if you didn't, that does NOT look like a bunch of grills under a roof. I especially appreciate the lighting along the top. Looks like a comfortable place where you can grill and have a beer or two!

The lighting is great. I can see everything with ease at night. And yes, I’ve been having a couple beers out there while grilling (and not grilling for that matter, lol)
Thanks for the kind words
