Title: #%ing Wind!
Post by: Cellar2ful on February 10, 2020, 12:34:08 PM
I have always kept covers on my cooker kettles. Yesterday we had a high wind warning forecast in the Bay Area, with wind gusts up to 50 mph. I have had wind gusts in my area up to 65 mph in the past and never had a problem with my Webers.

That is until yesterday.

Walked out back to find my yellow 22" laying on it's side with the cover still on.  Pulled the cover off and this is the damage from the fall.

Take a look at the impact damage to the handle.

I've seen a lot of damage to handles but none this bad.  The wind must have gotten beneath the cover and lifted the kettle, causing it to vault over the front leg.  It's the only way I can figure how the impact occurred on the front bowl handle, causing the extensive damage.

Two covers from other kettles were blown off and found in the corner of my yard.  Three other kettles with covers experienced no problem.

Dang...sorry man.  That sucks.  Hopefully some good luck will come around the corner after getting hit with this bad luck.

Well that makes me sick to my stomach just looking at it.  Sorry this happened Jim!  Luckily it will still cook a good meal and get that orange glow.

Saw those yellow flakes and I knew it wasn’t good.  You’ve still got a beauty there, just with an additional story.  Keep on loving her.....

I've always tried to be an optimist, trying to find ways to turn lemons into lemonade.  Yesterday I treated the newly exposed bare metal with olive oil and fired up the wind damaged Gourmet.  If you have been around the WKC Forum for a while you probably have seen I occasionally name kettles.  From this day forward, this one will be known as "Windy".

Too bad. So sorry to hear about your kettle.

I’ve been meaning to post here for a while. Do Weber kettles stand up to wind? To be exact, the question is are they aerodynamic???

I found out with a cover on they can get quite airborne.

I had a pristine DR code outside for two years up against the north side of my garage. One winter storm this year and got pulled from the wall and landed about five feet from where it was.

Oddly the cover saved it from damage but I’m sure it was the thing that got it flying.

I ask this as a valid question since so many members have their collection stored outside.

I’m not an engineer but I’m guessing they are more aerodynamic than a square metal box and less aerodynamic than an airplane. The answer lies somewhere in betwixt [emoji3]
