I just found out the gas tank on my 1992 Performer can’t be refilled anymore. The grill is in great condition. I hate to scrap it or use without the LP gas starter system. Anybody have a mod for this problem?

There is a mod on the forums to convert to a 1lb or 20lb tank, however you should be able to refill if you find a place that will recertify your tank. I do it here in Illinois at a place called Suburban Propane all the time, runs about $10 for the recert. Or...If you can’t find, send tank to me, I’ll have it recertified for you, and ship back.

If you have ferrellgas they charged me 13 or so, to fill and recertify.

44bucks dont sound too bad, and I think a new tank wouldnt need to be re-cetified for 10-12 years, instead of 5 for one thats been re-certified. Dont throw out that old one if you grab a new one though

Recert your tank if you can.
Some newer 5lb ones don’t have the “flat” on the handle in the right orientation. Check ahead of time if you need to order a new one.

I got my tank recertified for about 15 bucks , but the guy had to put it under pressure for 10 minutes or so . He said if it did not pass it would be expensive to repair . He did sell me a converter to run off of a big tank for $30, so I can do that if if want.

There are all really good recommendations here.
I used to collect Performers and obsessed with the Gas assist starters until I discovered how convenient and cheap weber lighter cubes are.
I'd take the tank off and save your money by using lighter cubes.

+1 on Joe's comment. Lighter cubes are the way to go, and you don't have to remember to turn off the gas. Can't tell you how many times I've burned up a chimney full of coals that way. Also can't tell you how many times I've run out of gas (using the Gen 2 type cylinders) and not had a spare waiting. 1 chimney + 1 cube = success.

Whatever you do dont trash that old tank there are plenty of guys on this forum that will buy it from you, so they will have original equipment for an RRR.
The new tanks available at the box stores are not the same and will not fit like the original do, like SteveMBH was saying.

Call some of the local propane dealers in your area & ask if the recertify tanks. Ask how much. Mom & pops usually work better as they tend to have someone who can recertify. I got my 5 lb tank recertified for free with a fill-up at a local place. If memory serves, it was a bit more than $5 (including tax) and the tank was filled up too.
It had the old style valve handle, not the newer triangular style used now that indicates it has overflow protection, but there was a sticker on it that stated it had overflow protection. The bigger places often won't even fill it unless it has the triangular valve handle. He mentioned that others might not refill it because of that & basically suggested I become a repeat customer. I really don't use propane too much, but will use this place as it's family run & he will fill a 20 lb tank all the way to 20 lb for around 20 & those exchange tanks are often only filled to 15 lbs & often cost 20 & up to exchange.
For anyone near O'hare in Chicago, if you ever drive up Milwaukee Ave through Niles, bring your propane tank & stop at Tebons. Propane seems to be all they do & they have been around forever.

You might check with a welding supply store. They recertify tanks all the time.
