Title: Genesis Red Head
Post by: MagnoliaTom on September 07, 2019, 11:37:00 AM
Picked up this gem this morning. I believe it’s from 1998. Going to need new grates, igniter and flavorizer bars. A good clean up and this’ll be in the regular rotation. Wife be be excited to be able to grill again as she is too impatient and unwilling to cook with charcoal.

A classic.  IMHO better than Weber gassers made today.  Enjoy the restore.

Replaced the wood slats with some new ones. I used mahogany that I already had in the garage.

That thing looks pretty nice Tom! Congrats. I broke the handle on mine while I was trying to put it on top of the car lol.

Thanks. Wife likes it and is anxious to fire it up. Need to get the propane tank filled (it has the quick connect fittings) or get a new regulator hose to use on a standard tank. All the new parts I ordered will be delivered tomorrow so hopefully we can grill something on it soon.

Looking great. My wife and I have been loving our recent accusation of a silver genesis. Wish it was a red head wood slat but I liked the price of free so can’t complain. Looking forward to seeing some cooking photos on this one!

Got my replacement parts in today.

New grates, flavorizer bars, igniter, and warming rack. Also got the propane tank filled.

Going to cook something on it after I burn off all the new parts.

Grilled some chicken on the genesis tonight. Didn’t take any pics but the chicken (boneless breasts) turned out great and the grill performed flawlessly. This thing cooks really well. Very even heat. I’m really impressed and happy with this old redhead!

I need to get my tanks filled. Having a gasser is convenient for when its late and you need to get dinner going fast. Also cooks hotdogs perfectly lol

My wife doesn’t want to fool around with charcoal because she is impatient and just wants to get cooking. So this grill is really for her but you’re 100% correct in saying a gasser is great for its convenience and ease of use to get things cooked quickly. She loves the vintage style and color and the bonus is it was way cheaper than buying a new grill and I’m sure it cooks better than a new cheap grill. I only paid $40 for the grill and I had some gift cards to amazon laying around so my new parts were only $35 after I used the gift cards. Now, this thing should last another 20 years [emoji3]

Made a new handle out of mahogany today

Didn’t quite match color wise to the new slats after the boiled linseed oil was applied but it looks ok.

Thanks. Hardest part was cutting out the three slots. They’re not perfectly straight but I’m not Norm Abrams so it’ll do [emoji3]

Excellent work on the handle. You should consider making more to sell.

I’m a “shade tree” carpenter. I don’t have a wood shop to produce them but thanks for the compliment and suggestion [emoji3]

I think I still have enough scrap lumber laying around if you need one.

I could really make my own, I could use a template actually. But I'm not in a big hurry to fix up my gasser, need to get this ssp done

That hanging warming rack is underrated. The redhead looks great!. I just posted a 1993 Genesis 2000 Restoration project, almost identical. Great job!

I’m thinking about getting a rotisserie for the genesis. Is the 9890 the one I need for this old grill?

I picked up a NOS rotisserie 9890 from a local ACE hardware. Looking forward to some rotisserie meats!

It could be just old grease inside the gears that has dried and hardened up.
I have saved several vintage rotisserie motor assemblies by simply cleaning out the old grease and relubricating them. Or maybe the store will just swap the motor out of a newer kit for you.

The ACE had 2 more units on the shelf. I’m going to swap it with another one that I hope works. If not, I’ll try one of your suggestions. Thanks!

Just to circle back, I did get a replacement rotisserie from the ACE store. Tested it out before leaving the store and it works. Both were stamped 06/02 on the motor so it’s very period correct for the grill [emoji3]
