I basically grew up on Kingsford and that's what I've been using and sometimes royal oak, and ideas to enhance the taste of my food? For $12 for two 18 lb bags for Kingsford I feel like I can't go wrong.

I like kingsford. I also like royal oak lump. Those two are about all I use except kingsford pro in the summer. Costco always has two packs at a good price during summer months.
Small amounts of choice smoke wood here and there is what really affects flavor.

I love Kingsford for hot cooks but for low and slow I choose Royal Oak Natural...Kingsford can sometimes put off a strange flavor when lighting in a minion situation...Also love to use various lump for indirect cooks...But RO lump is off the list because of too much foreign material in the bag...

Just curious what do you like about the kingsford pro vs the regular stuff? My costco seems to have the stuff year around but at 10 bucks per bag in 2 packs.
-
I don't like Kingsford. I use RO lump and briquets exclusively. Never had any issues with RO...
-
I'm with hawgheaven. I use RO Lump for most of my cooking even for long cooks. Way less ash.

Imo, it lights faster and burns hotter. This is at the expense of slightly shorter burn times. I fire up the grill when I get home from work frequently and I like a fast lighting coal.

Yup. The ash level is wonderfully low with RO. And not to mention, the smoke flavor is spot on...yum. Beats hell outta Kingsford IMHO.

Both Royal Oak lump and briquettes for me. Mostly use the lump in my Kamado Joe (I know, sorry!).

I prmarily use Royal Oak briquettes. Lowe's sells it for about 5 bucks a bag... Then there is Embers charcoal at home depot, which is made by Royal Oak. Both work for me.

I liked Stubbs but Royal Oak briqs is more econimical and yields great results. Lights quickly in the chimney and lasts easily during my long cooks. The left overs get used to start the next cook with my bigger better basket full of wood chunks and briqs.

Anybody ever used FOGO charcoal or Cowboy charcoal?

Anybody ever used FOGO charcoal or Cowboy charcoal?
Never heard of FOGO...? I have used Cowboy lump and my recommendation is, stay away from it. It is full of scrap lumber and is shit IMHO.

Is the Cowboy stuff being phased out?
Also.....has anybody tried the Expert Grill from WalMart?
They’re both available nearby and cheap.
I like cheap.
Especially if it’s good stuff and I can stock up.

I used some of the cheap embers stuff last weekend. Works well lit in about the same time my kbb does. No real notable difference between this and kbb in my opinion. Just an FYI

Cowboy briquettes are good, especially at that price.....it is actually the same charcoal as Stubbs in a Cowboy bag. I am guessing that Expert is Royal Oak rebranded for Wal-Mart.

Anybody ever used FOGO charcoal or Cowboy charcoal?
Have used regular Cowboy Lump and didn’t like it but then tried Cowboy Lump “Southern Style” which is mainly hickory and oak and what a difference. I really like the southern style and have gone through about 4 bags with only good results. Unfortunately Costco only carried it in the summer time and it’s a little harder to find by me.
Just bought some FOGO on some high recommendations by some of the popular BBQ YouTubers and also the local BBQ Galore rep. It’s 100% oak and expensive but haven’t tried it yet.

For lump I use either Basques or Maple Leaf. Briquettes are Maple Leaf, Weber or Royal oak. Anything but Kingsford.

Used a bag of the Cowboy and all went well for me. Went back to Lowe’s so I could grab a few more 5$ bags of the Cowboy and saw this...

I picked up a bag of Kingsford Hardwoods Briquettes at Home Depot a while back. Wasn't sure if this was new or a Home Depot exclusive, etc.
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Kingsford-12-lbs-Hardwood-Charcoal-Briquettes-4460032273/307771547
I've used the Professional and Long-Burning from Kingsford, but hadn't seen this before.
Its pricey so I will wait till a sale before I would purchase more. I do like the flavor that came off of it though.

I wonder if they'll ever make an even denser briquette by using the same technologies used to make wood pellet's for stoves and smokers.
-
I have only been using Kingsford briquettes with all my cooks. When I picked up my first kettle at a garage sale, it came with about 70# of Kingsford. Yep a good score. I am now down to about a half of bag left, so will be looking to buy some more charcoal soon. I have not had any problem with the original briquettes, but may look to some lump now too.

When I used briquettes it was always Stubbs, not a fan of Kingsford charcoal at all. Though since I got the WSM I have fully switched to using lump all the time. Right now I'm really digging the Western lump that Walmart has for 10 bucks for 30lbs.
-
Kingsford for me. The main options for me around here is the royak oak lump and kingsford BB when I can find it. I don't like the RO lump because there are way to many small peices that fall through the charcoal grate and the chimney grate. I really wish I could find it on sale like some of you guys. I'm paying $15 a bag and it never comes on sale. Seems the only stuff that does go on sale is the RO lump for $10 a bag
-
I guess I spoke to soon. I found 15.4 lbs bag of RO Classic briquettes for $8.99/bag at my local Canadian tire. All they had was 6 bags so I cleaned them out. Never tried it before but at that price I’ll give it a shot

I just finished my last bag of Weber brand charcoal, my wife got it on sale for 3.99 at lowes last January. I think it's better than kingsford hands down but regular price is 19.99 for 1 bag. The coals are bigger and seem to burn better and more efficient.

KBB. I've tried a bunch but keep going back to KBB. It certainly is not the best, but it is by far the most burn for the price. Since most of my charcoal is used in the WSM18, this is my most important metric. Also, if I send my wife for charcoal, I can be assured she will get the right bag. I'll use lump–local brand or Royal Oak–if I get some good steaks. Otherwise, all KBB for me.

You're not crazy and that charcoal works really good. It lights a little slower than Kingsford but doesn't smell as bad. It also produces less ash and last about the same. I tried it sometime last year and haven't stopped buying it since. I really like Expert Grill Charcoal.

Rockwood. 100% Missouri hardwood lump.
I contacted customer service to complain about a rock I found in the bag (previous 20 or so bags never had a thing). The rep explained the whole process to me, how that sometimes it's just inevitable even though they have extensive procedures in place, and because of that, they always add a pound of charcoal over what is advertised on the bag, so that nobody gets ripped off. After all that he even offered to refund my money. No need, just wanted to confirm that there were no changes in quality. I ended up talking to the guy about cars, family in the area, all sorts of stuff...turns out, I was talking to the owner the whole time. Couldn't have been nicer. Said the business was his livelihood and he takes all inquiries seriously. I haven't bought another brand in 3 years.

Grate story Mike. Peaked my interest, so I looked for distributors in my area. Being in NJ, closest is about 25 miles away. Next time I am in that area will look to pick up a bag or two.

Same here I ordered 3 bags directly from Rockwood last night - free shipping on 3+ bags.
I have been using cowboy hardwood lump for a few years in my UDS. I liked it/had no issues. I picked up my first kettle last month and started noticing things I don’t like about cowboy - somewhat strange smell after the coals cool off (might just be me!) and the big 1 - good sized pieces of steel mixed in with my charcoal.
Looking forward to trying out Rockwood next week!

Wow, old thread back to life.....B&B for me 90% of the time. I like the oak briquettes (orange bag) and oak lump (brown bag). Not a Kingsford hater like a lot on FB, I really like chicken cooked over it - especially on the rotisserie which is another new discovery. Also cooked our new year’s rib roast on the rotisserie with Kingsford.
