Title: Anyone ever consider meal prep?
Post by: Travis on October 26, 2018, 11:26:59 AM
I made a goal this year to lose weight, get back in the gym and change my nutrition. I successfully lost 65 lbs over the year cutting out shit food, mostly processed stuff and the hardest was cutting back on the alcohol. So, I looked into meal prepping. I figured this would be a way to ensure I had a healthy meal every day and so far for the year it has worked extremely well. Nothing fancy just basic foods and ingredients. The rest of the day I’m just mindful of what I eat. Still have pizza, ribs, and the occasional Steak ‘n Shake triple burger but not everyday and don’t go crazy with it.
Anyways, I’d thought I’d share what I made for my lunch dinners this week. It’s grilled chicken breast with mashed potatoes, brown rice, black beans and broccoli. The ingredients change every few weeks so I don’t get burned out but this is basically what I’ve been doing. Normally use sweet potatoes but we’re having russets tonight so may as well use that.

Take care guys.

I usually grill enough at night to have leftovers for lunch. I hardly ever eat fast food.

Are those your lunches for a tire week?  That’s a great way to do it. I don’t always have access to a microwave. I may have to chuck the go anywhere gas in the truck to warm up leftovers.

Congrats on the weight loss and the moderation. It’s not easy.

Thanks man. Yes, those are for the whole work week. Depending on the shift depends on what I’ve been making but I just pop them in the microwave (if needed) and warm them up.

Awesome prep work, Tami plans most meals and enough leftovers for lunches for both of us. We try to maintain a low carb lifestyle for weight loss/control and health as well. Hats off for the weight loss and the planning. You must plan well if you want to eat healthy.

Travis! Food for thought man! Great idea on the week long prep. I need to lose a bunch of pounds. Giving up the rum will be tough though. Glad to hear your success.

Congrats @Travis!  Making a simple (not necessarily easy) change like that and seeing actual results is something to be really proud of!

Thanks guys. Here another one that doesn’t require a re-heat of any kind. Pasta noodles, diced cucumber and tomato, pre cooked shrimp (grilled would be better, just done for ease) and topped with green onion and Italian dressing drizzled over. Literally takes like 20 minutes to make.

Congrats on the weight loss Travis. I need to do the same. The meals look great. I just bought bigger pants today, only one pair because I plan on this being temporary.

Travis, I I never realized that! Dude, you’re a rail the last time I saw you. That’s grate!

My wife and I subscribe to EMeals.com and choose the heart healthy menu. For about five bucks a month you get a menu, recipes, and a shopping list. We love it and it takes the thought out of “what’s for dinner”. We’ve done this for about five years and we love it! (This is not a commercial and I have no financial stake in this, we simply love this convenience)

I have clue what I’m looking at, but I’d love to have that outfit, especially when cleaning the bathroom after the kids...

I’m prepping. Windy as hell but not bad in the smoke shack.

Don’t confuse the drink. It’s Diet Coke.

Congratulations on the weight loss my friend! I really wish I could do lunches for each day of the week but no microwave in my car. Lol [emoji23].  I take cold cuts when I can. The more I save on eating out the more grills and grilling I can do.

Awesome!  I had some health issues and have recently been eating healthier and cutting out junk (no more pop was the hardest).  I don't individually portion leftovers like you do, but when I'm grilling chicken and veggies (i love grilled vegetables) I always make more than the wife and I need, and use the the leftovers for healthier lunches/dinners during the week.  Haven't touched fast food in months.  Great work on the weight loss and overall healthier lifestyle.  Keep it up!

Half way through my first week of healthy meal prep. Love it!  I had no idea this was a thing. It combines everything I love. Cooking and eating. [emoji3]

I’m pretty excited about figuring out what to make for next week.

It’s so easy in the morning. Just grab my meal out of the fridge and go.

This Lunch bag is awesome. The freezer packs are built into the bag so you put the whole bag in the freezer and no need to transfer the cold packs every day. Makes it a little more convenient in the morning. Have had mine for over 2 years now and still going strong. They also make a few other styles too. This along with a Hydro Flask Yeti type drink container and you’re all set. My office is jealous when I’m eating BBQ all week long, those Paleo type diets are great. Eat more meat and not gain the weight.

Thanks to Travis for this thread’s inspiration....

We see our fair share of homeless people down here in Jacksonville.  Sometimes I’ll give them whatever loose change or single dollars I have, but I always wonder whether they’re truly going to get something to eat, or just get their next substance fix.

I saw this post a couple months ago and decided I would put forth just a little bit more energy and, in conjunction with my meager profits flipping grills, start giving warm meals instead of cash.

A quick trip to our local Restaurant Depot yielded the necessary to-go containers and a couple of huge pork shoulders.  Because dry beans are much cheaper than canned, I made the baked beans from scratch using Catskillsmoker’s maple syrup and maple sugar among other ingredients.  I used Rub’s Swamp Boys rub on the shoulders and Swamp Boy’s BBQ sauce in the finished pulled pork.  I also made a basic cornbread in the oven.  Once all the food was finished, I weighed out 8 ounces of meat, 6 ounces of beans, and two pieces of cornbread per individual serving.  By this time, my wife figured out what I was doing, and took it upon herself to make “doggy bags” with dry dog food and a couple of dog treats to hand out as well.  (Why do so many homeless people have dogs?)

So with a couple of coolers loaded with warm meals, we headed towards downtown on Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving, to hand out meals.   I had never done anything like this before, and I won’t lie, I was a little nervous.  The first person we gave a meal asked if I could open the box and unwrap the plastic utensils because her hands were too cold.  Another man started crying because he could share his food his family (we gave him two more meals).  We met veterans, prostitutes, and people with obvious mental health issues; all were thankful and non-threatening.  My earlier nervousness and apprehensions disappeared and as our food supply quickly dwindled, I vowed I would do this again before Christmas.  My only regret is not making more food, but that’s okay, turkeys went on sale right after Thanksgiving!

Thanks for looking.

Incredible Charlie - huge props for stepping up and doing this! That man's tears of joy alone must have instantly made the effort worthwhile.

Here's wishing you and your family a wonderful Christmas.

Very nice Charlie!  Was it that cold in Jacksonville?  The homeless down there have it made compared to our northern homeless. I’ve thought about doing something similar but never did it. Good on you for thinking about and actually executing. [emoji106]
