Title: Decline in WKC Participation: Thought's and Suggestions?
Post by: Mike in Roseville on October 05, 2018, 07:50:47 AM
Lately, it seems content contribution on this site has been in a sharp decline over the past few months. Many who used to post cooks no longer do so. Many familiar voices appear to have moved on.

So, I wanted to start a dialogue to check the pulse of the WKC.

Do you personally feel the WKC participation is declining? If so, why? What measures could be taken to reinvigorate the community?

I've noticed that also. Sharp decline seemed to have started at the middle of spring.  Much fewer new threads and comments. Seemed like they have moved on to FB as quite a few members are very active there.

I do believe that a lot of people like the instant feel of Facebook pages, I am not one of them. I prefer this forum because the feeling of speaking with actual people feels more real to me. @Mike in Roseville participation does feel like it has declined. I truly enjoy this forum and the members here. not a lot of drama! great ideas and all the things we do here as a community. How to reinvigorate I don't have any ideas but I am willing to help do that.

Another thing that I've noticed is that a lot of of new members join either to sell, gauge the value of their kettle or ask a specific question. Once they get their amswers, they never come back.

I don't do Facebook either.
I too have noticed the lack of participation.
I haven't posted too many cooks myself  lately because they have been the same as a previous cook that I have posted, or I have not taken pictures or good enough pictures to post. I am cooking a five pound bacon wrapped meatloaf tomorrow. I will try to get some good pictures of it to post.

Starting a new thread is a start.  But if there's no responses/comments from other members, then  the thread is basically cut off. Consequently the person who started the thread will be less likely to  post a similar new thread in the future.

Nice noticed that too when I realized it takes me less some to go through a day's worth of posts than it used to lol.

I don't have Facebook so I don't know what goes over there. I do love this community though!

I haven't been able to grill much for to the business of life. The times I do it is a quick late weekday grill where I'm just trying to get a simple dinner on the table. I do find value it posting simple cooks; it promotes community, shows that you don't need to be a super chef or have an amazing kettle on order to post something, but I just haven't take the time to do take pictures and share.

I also found myself with over 1000 posts in a matter of months and I didn't even realize it. I missed my 1000th post :( and I felt like most of my presence was just simple replies that didn't add much. There is value in that to, again promoting community and what not. I just for some reason decide to minimize what I post.

I don’t use Facebook. I have only been on this form for over a year or so. I love it I have gained tons of Info... I used to post a lot of pictures of my cooks and such . But would have maybe a reply or two. I stopped because it seemed like it wasn’t very important .  Didn’t want to clutter up the page with pictures of chicken legs lol. I truly think this place is awesome with a lot of awesome ppl. Maybe a way to “spice” it up . Just my thoughts .....

The site always feels slower when summer turns to fall and "bbq season" comes to an end.

This summer still had more topics and post replies than last summer, but not by much.

The organized leadership effort has been absent for most of this year and I take full responsibility for that.
My life is in a different place than it used to be and my priorities have changed.

I hate FaceBook.

When the weather cools is when I really hit the cookers.
This year we've had so much rain it made it hard to plan. (no roof, YET)

The stick burner will be getting a workout this w/e with 4-6 butts for the freezer.

Though not a true "collector" we have a good variety of our own and really do love
seeing the rare and pristine array of kettles in the possession of members here.
@harris92 is in a special class of his own but @Rub is gaining ground.

I try and post as much as I can but not unless it contributes to the conversation.

While I appreciate the attempt to build on WKC membership through the Facebook group, I do feel it has started to cannibalize this forum. It was nice when there was one place to look for sales, cooking tips, to see people’s cooks, etc. I’m also not big on Weber posts liberally peppered throughout my other Facebook content. No offense against the Facebook group, but I love this site and hope it remains strong.

I don't use Facebook, I use the WKC App. One of the few things I can use without having a Facebook account or Instagram account. I love this app, it's my go to social media fix. I love Weber and all things BBQ. This is a place I feel is perfect. It's the internet taylored to my liking.

I don't have a FB account. Over time, I've noticed the Club become fractured geographically; Australia, Chicago, St Louis, SOCAL, etc. in no particular order. Lots of areas of the country and the globe are left out or left to themselves. Founding members rarely post anymore. Meetups happen, but it's tough to pull off and get people to come out. Plenty of members could contribute a lot more than they do, but its simpler to post a pic in the "No Explanation" thread than research an article, document a Restore or list every freakin' logo grill or color Weber ever made. Everyone has different priorities, strengths and bandwidth. Having said all that, I prefer a smaller group in general - always have. Even if we got down to 20 or 30 solid members (OK maybe 50) who keep the flame lit that would be fine with me, but I understand it would be tough to keep the lights on in this format. Members ebb and flow, some get the bug and find it to be a fun escape from the daily grind. Some may be waiting or direction or support - thinking there must be a whole gang of professionals driving all this. Some get turned off by bad behavior or misunderstanding. The reality is its just a bunch of goofy grill people messing around with old kettles. That's OK in my book. Let's see if we can make it to 10! I'll start working on the anniversary logo - four years may be just enough time.

Since I’m interested in and cooking on many different cookers, it’s just easier to post on my Left Hand Smoke page and share to the various groups that pertain to whatever is going on.
On the other hand there are way too many Weber related Facebook pages that it’s hard to keep up with all of them. That goes for WSM pages and modifications groups as well.
I’m pretty much a thread killer here

I’m newer to the group, but have learned tons in my couple months involved! I’ve also had a chance to interact with several Bay Area/Sacramento people. Mike, Matt, Sidney, and Jim have welcomed me to the local WKC chapter which has been great. I enjoy all that I see and try and learn something new about Weber’s everyday. Keep it up everyone!

I haven't  posted at all lately. Why? I really don't know. Not posting on facebook either. Is my weberitis cured? I don't think so because I'm still lurking here and facebook, still searching CL, still using and loving my kettles. So what is it? For me I think it's just I feel I have nothing to contribute. We've all seen a million pics of ribs. How many times can I post pics of my kettles? It seems like every kettle related subject has already been covered pretty thoroughly. I would like to contribute more in the cooking section but my photography skills aren't very good and I'm usually too consumed with the cooking than taking pictures.  With that said, I still love it here and prefer here to facebook. I'm gonna do a prime rib tomorrow and will try to get a few pics.

To Mike in Roseville. You bring up a very valid point. That being said, message board members do have a “life cycle” and people do come and go and maybe come back too. I would love to see the WKC hit 10 years and it will.

I think a lot of good points have already been made about Facebook groups, repetitive cook posts, and just plain busy lives.
I think we need to remember that we are the WKC and that we make this community what it is. It's like Fight Club you decide your own level of involvement, and an ebb and flow is quite alright.
It's funny this came up because I was just thinking this morning, we haven't had a good ecook in awhile. I always liked having those and it seems like a fun way to keep people involved. Just my two cents.
I do appreciate this place and check in everyday, even if I don't comment as much as I used to. Plus it's been like a year that I've had a score! Going through withdrawals
Thanks everyone for being silly grill collectors/cookers [emoji3]

I run the WKC GrillGiants Facebook group so, most of my time is spent there. I’ll do the best I can to post more in here and have been trying to do so lately. I’m not very savvy with technology so the Facebook interface is much easier for me to navigate and interact with. Also, I love the ability to instant message and video chat via messenger. With saying that, both Troy and myself have been absolutely swamped this year between work and running the sites, groups, meet-ups etc. You all couldn’t imagine how much time is actually spent. So, I’d like to thank brother Troy for making this all happen and even if your (his) contributions have been lighter this year, it’s still an incredibly heavy load and I hope everyone knows this. It’s extremely difficult to juggle work life, family life, and “hobby” life while satisfying everyone’s needs and wants. I hope everyone here knows they are welcome to join us on Facebook, I know you all may not use it, but maybe give it a try! It’s a lot of fun, we do giveaways, and we currently have nearly 4400 members since April! Jump in, the water’s warm! Hope everyone is having a blessed Weber day! #GrillOn [emoji3]

Facebook is an entirely different breed of social platform. It's built around quick and easy engagements that go away within days.

I think FB communities are great for exposure and casual interactions, but the WKC forum is where the most hardcore will live and the most authoritative content will thrive.

I think FB communities are great for exposure and casual interactions, but the WKC forum is where the most hardcore will live and the most authoritative content will thrive.

Thread cleaned up and ban issued.

Regardless of your passion for webers grills, it is NEVER acceptable to make personal attacks towards another member.

We are a community of kettle heads, not an alliance of ideals.
Well said brother!

I still cook and post! ;-)
I would not worry so much about it.
Some people are slaves to the social media monster, and some just enjoy life for all it offers and they are satisfied.
That being said... Pulled Pork and French Fries today!

This search forum alone is what sets this place apart from FB.  On what seems like slow days I’ll just search a subject which will lead to multiple other searches.  I really enjoy the early posts when the WKC was just starting out.
Thanks Troy. Great work.

As a new member, this club is amazing. The grills our members have are second to none. FB is all BS look at me! And all of the questions are dumb AF. The FB asshole in me crossed over once and Troy stepped in and said “ stop being a dick”! I only have FB for marketplace in the hopes of finding more Weber’s. I don’t post many pictures of my grills because they’re mostly new. I feel this club is built on older classic Weber Kettle’s.

I haven't been posting as much as I used to, but I am still here looking around pretty much every day.
My kettle shed is FULL! I haven't been showing off anything new, and I am very happy with the eclectic collection of cookers that I have.
I keep cooking the same stuff, so it rarely occurs to me that I should take pictures.
I am in a dozen or so FB groups that are about Weber products or related items. I don't participate very often there either.
I do like to post links to WKC resources in answer to FB questions. Especially on Kettlehedz!

I’m only here for a Chief, fuck the rest of it!

KIDDING!

I’ve learned a lot since joining in 2015 and I’m grateful for all the knowledge gained from all the experience this club has to offer.

Yeah my cooks are boring, I’m not a chef and plating up gorgeous plates like our chefs and that’s ok with me. Love seeing the product, just with a 3 and 1 year old and 40+ hours per week my focus is not the presentation.

It kind of pisses me off to see someone join, ask about the value then see the grill show up on the bay or down south but I get over it quickly.

I try to be respectful, humble, and helpful the best I can. I’ve given grills away, I like seeing people get what they are looking for and that Karma has come full circle.

WKC is where it’s at, fuck Facebook. That is just a market place for me.

Viva la WKC

Next stop Memphis for the Q. Any and all recommendations greatly appreciated. Then on to Washington DC (even got on a White House tour). Much respect to all.

I didn’t get to read through all 7 pages, but I’ll say my participation here has declined due to football season. I coach middle School football so 6 days a week, I’m doing that and when I’m not, I’m with my family.

Also, ALL of my grilling posts are out here. I don’t post anything grill related there as those people don’t understand my Weberitis like you guys and gals do.

That being said, I have a good post to put out there. I’ll go do that now.

I’m still here visiting multiple times a day but I rarely post pics of my cooks anymore because they are usually the same old cooks I’ve done for a while now and when I do grill up something new and exciting I forget to take the dang pictures. I don’t Facebook or any other media, just watching what happens here.  I think even though I have all seen the same pork ribs hundreds of times I still feel inspired to fire up the grill and hone the skills I have due to those same old pork ribs. My nemesis this summer has been beef short ribs (Dino Bones) trying to perfect them, sometimes doing them multiple weekends in a row but only because of the inspiration found here.
I don’t collect as much as I used to as I ran out of room but I did find a nice red head yesterday. So I guess I just need to pull out my camera, post some pics and hope I inspire someone else to light a fire.

I’m fairly new and didn’t really post much before, but I’ve really kinda disappeared from this place lately. As someone said earlier, I also have a 3 and 1 year old so time has been scarce.  But I did just score a brand new in box 18” WSM and a brand new in box 26” kettle in consecutive weekends for half price each! I’ve really wanted both of those for a while now, so I’m pretty stoked for that.  I’ll check in more for sure.

Time being scarce has been a problem for me too.  I've been swamped with work and a bunch of other stuff plus we've had several bouts of rainy weather here so I've been eating out more from being away from home, not cooking anything of note, or been rained out and not firing anything up outdoors.  My participation level unfortunately reflects that.  Hopefully things will settle down and change for the better once I'm off the midnight shift rotation that's coming up.

Facebook serves it's purpose but will never replace the archive of information and ease of access through searches available here.

The searchable archive of posts here is incredible.

Thanks to the mods for putting in the work to keep it going.

I agree decline for sure, funny how I have said to myself the same thing.
I would post cooks or comments and no action from anyone. It kinda seems like a popularity contest or high school like if your clicked up with the cool crowd. Just seems like a hand full of peeps remain active and comment on each other’s post. I would always see my boy Darko when I initially joined and now is MIA hope he’s alright.
I STILL LOGG IN and check but it seems like the same old boring posts or same old questions. Sometimes I’ll get lucky and see something cool or some people like to just post and show off their unique kettles and kinda brag about it. But anyway maybe I’m just hating!

Sometimes the forum is busy enough that some posts and comments go unnoticed. That’s ok and do not get discouraged. I’ve had several posts with no replies and several with. I don’t think it has anything to do with a popularity contest. Just the natural ebb and flow of the forum from time to time.

So I missed this thread and have to say I'm guilty of not so many posts recently. Lots of personal stuff going on as well as the FB group. I'm certainly going to try and be more active here in the forums. This is where the "REAL" Weber heads are. I've made some great friends here and would hate to see this forum turn into a ghost town. I realize people like the instant responses that FB and other social pages offer but people on those groups come and go. IMO this is the "Must go" for all things to be Weber kettle related. I must concur.  It’s been a busy fall in that my recently emptied nest has just welcomed my mom into the household. Then, we are now in the middle of buying a new house (that has in-law quarters) that wasn’t expected, but is a one in a million find for the price on 3 acres. My heart is here on the forum, no Facebook for me, but life has seriously got in the way of my postings.

Sometimes, just sometimes, life gets in the way of passion-for-kettle-cooking.  I too have been overcome by my non-kettle activities lately.  Of course, I never use all the kettles I collected found so nothing to really share.

I think I'm one of the guilty ones that haven't been around.   Not that was a daily poster or anything but just haven't been around.   I actually had some spare time today and thought I'd pop in and lurk when I found this thread.
No particular reason for not coming around.   I hate FB, I do have an account but use it only to see my grandkids.  I have been checking in on the BBQ Brethren site more, but again no particular reason.
I do enjoy this forum too.
I think now that I don't really consider myself a newbie anymore, I have less questions so no need to post.....  Then when someone asks for advise, I feel there are still more experienced cooks here that can answer better than I can so I don't reply to them.  It's also winter and I don't cook much outside when it gets cold.   I used to, but as I age I've realized the cold sucks!

I am new here so take that with a cup of salt... i find it alot to navigate to the different pages then topics then threads . Its great for deep research but a what's new today page would be great.

I pass on facebook but am a big fan of Instagram. It takes basically any image. I have to either lower my phone resolution or screen shot my own pics. This is fine for big projects and restores but if I just want to post my cook or a quick pic I am going to do it on Instagram for now.

In short this is like submitting a paper for peer review...insta or FB are more like a bulletin board. I will get settled in and maybe it will change.

That concludes my Ted Talk
