Title: Black label.
Post by: Jules V. on July 30, 2018, 01:19:10 PM: Can't find the specific black handles that i want so upon recommendation from @56mpg, i decided to dye them instead. Placed a bottle of dye in a pot and simmered it for 3 hours. Also decided to dye the stock wooden weber handles and applied 5 thin coats of spar varnish. The wood handles were dyed overnight along with tap water. It's a week long process as i have to wait a day before sanding and applying new coats.

So do I keep the water boiling for the 3 hours or just boil, add dye then drop the handles in a soak over night?

I let it simmer for 3 hours and left it in the pot until the next day. Next time around I'll try it on a pressure cooker.

Used to have a couple cooking way in the garage
for removing paint from reclaimed antique door
and window hardware.

I REALLY hate the gray / whiteish color of the ones on my daisy wheel kettle and would LOVE to go to black on the handles.

It's very durable as the dye will bond to the plastic. Won't get affected with heat, steel wool, cleaning agent etc.

This the product that i used. Also tried a different brand in powder form but it didn't work nearly as well.

This is a dye specifically for synthetics but unfortunately it doesn't come in black, more of a very dark grey/graphite.

The AR15 crowd had been using the liquid Rit dye for years on the FDE and tan rifle furniture and magazines. One company Magpul even released a Sand colored line of their pmag magazines specifically to be dyed by the end user. For the handles do you use straight rit dye or add water? Also has anyone tried red?

I add enough water to fully submerge the handles and also compensate for evaporation. Keep the lid on to minimize evaporation. Never tried different colors yet.

Post by: Tbagley on August 06, 2020, 08:38:33 AM: I would imagine if your kettle is sitting in full sun post dying, they may get pretty warm to the touch? Looks great though, people have been dying plastic parts for a long time with good success provided the original base color is fairly neutral.

They are very comfortable but by the time they age they really stick out. I’m thinking about turning this in to a black and blue kettle now. I have the originals but I put the wood ones on from a ten dollar GGA.

I’m thinking black foot, ash pan, handles and wheels. The whitewalls have fallen off anyway.

I grabbed a standard grey handle I recently received and did the three hour simmer in plain old rit black dye. The first pic after the dye bath was after iy 30 minutes. Turned out nice, but I wish I removed the Weber printing from the handle. Turned out almost greenish (?). The last pic is a comparison with a factory black MT handle.
Not perfect but overall this is a HUGE improvement over grey! I may do this to my white handle and some wooden ones I have coming.
Hell....I may even try to dye my old plastic performer table!

Post by: bigjeffb on May 13, 2022, 06:15:05 AM: Thought I would share the final product of dyeing the wood handle I plan on using for my crimson LE gen 2 performer project. I wish the original impression in the wood was more visible, but they were pretty worn to begin with. Took my sweet time doing this and only applying the spar urethane when the weather was juuuussst right to minimize sanding.
Next step is Little Man and I making a wood tabletop for it as his project for scouts.

Post by: Samuel on November 16, 2022, 07:29:22 PM: Jules really like the old handles with the Taco Shell if I am right at what I am seeing here. Where did you get the steel handles for that mod. Are they custom made. Do you drill out the old style handles out and put in the steel ones?
