Title: How do I clean the rust off kettle?
Post by: vader06 on January 19, 2018, 05:54:23 AM
Has anyone had any luck removing rust stains off a kettle.  I want to be careful with this one. The kettle has never been used........ever.
It is a nice thumbscrew black.

The grill sat in a corner of a barn for over 40 years.  The guy that owned it before me told me the grill belonged to his father who had passed away.  His father bought two of these grills and this one was a backup grill in case something were to happen to the other.

If anybody has some tips to remove the rust off this beautiful kettle please let me know. Thanks.

I think I remember a thread where someone used Mr.Clean Magic Erasure to remove the stains from the porcelain.  As far as the rust itself, 0000 steel wool is where I'd start.

Naval Jelly has been mentioned around the base of the handles. I use Evapo-Rust for pretty much everything.

Edit: Now that I think about it, I believe Barkeepers Friend is what someone used with good success around the base of the handles. There's a thread here somewhere.

I use Barkeeper's Friend in the powdered format.  Just be careful with it as it can stain if left on too long.  Here is a thread about some staining that I got out of a green kettle (there is also a link to a discussion about it leaving a stain):

X2. Gives it that "I've been around and seen some things" vibe

I’ve had Barkeepers Friend take the shine off porcelain, be careful.

Dang man, what a find! Sitting in a barn for years on end, and re-uniting it with the breath of outdoors. That's just too cool! Congrats!!

Agreed. You don't want to scrub with it.  Just let the chemicals do the work.

To quote @pbe gummi bear from my prior thread:
I use barkeeeper's friend in powder form, make a paste of it, and place it on the rust for a minute or two then rinse or wipe it off. Repeat as needed. Don't rub it in as it's mildly abrasive and can dull your kettle.

I use #0000 steel wool on all my restorations.  I just cleaned an Ambassador that had similar rust stains using only steel wool. All the rust stains came off easily.

I would not use barkeepers friend on porcelain enamel.  I use 0000 steel wool.  For tough stains I will lightly spray the wool with WD40 and then give the kettle a bath.  Worked great on this one.

I will try the steel wool first and go from there.  Thank you every one for your input!

Steel wool and WD 40 will be your friend.
I use it often with kettles.

Sometimes I also use Nevredull too.
But according to the manufacturer it’s not for painted surfaces. So if you try, try without guarantee. :-)

I have had good success with Evaporust on the rust around the handle and other welds.   Use a nylon detail brush or tooth brush.    Dip brush in fresh liquid, scrub, repeat.

You can also fold a paper towel up 3 or more times and soak it with the Evaporust and wrap the rusted area.  Use magnets to hold the paper towel to the area if necessary.  Remove and try the brush technique again.  Repeat the soak, wrap, brush process.  This will remove or loosen the rust and you can finish with steel wool and Evaporust if necessary.

This process worked well for me on a couple clean ups this summer.

Trying to find some before and after picts.

I have had good luck removing stains from our kitchen sink (white porcelain over cast iron) using automatic dishwasher detergent gel. It contains some bleach, and is thick enough to remain wet for a while after you apply it.

I have been working on the rust stains this weekend.  WD-40 and the “0000” steel wool is
working.
