Title: 1980 Weber Imperial Sequoia Restored
Post by: Hogsy on August 13, 2017, 01:53:10 AM
First of all a massive thanks to Scott Pearce for the heads up and to @Bear for being my number one agent.
Thanks to everyone for the advice on restoring although a few said to just oil, I found that that the timber as so weathered it just made it a lot darker so after debating what to do I decided to go the full restore.
And glad I did, I had so much fun pulling this thing down and getting stuck into it. I did have to employ the services of my apprentice being such a big job
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170813/03208f10cf7ae36be142777b03d083fe.jpg)

First step was to pull the whole thing apart and scrub down with a bristled scrubbing brush and hot soapy water
Here she is in all her glory. It's in amazing condition considering the age with all the timber and hardware in tact and a very well looked after kettle
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170813/6bb29e783fbad54c52ae8102f1aba279.jpg)

All pulled down (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170813/abba926044c3085485611feb038dd3f1.jpg)
After washing I gave it a light sand with 120 grit then 240 to finish. I was great seeing the timber coming back to life
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170813/9947a7491e4e994c91538b709795d4b6.jpg)
Once it was all sanded back came the hard part. Deciding whether to restain or just oil, after testing some oil on the timber it was obvious it would go back to its original dark colour if I didn't stain. It was obvious that it had an original stain as the the shelf and inside of the doors that hadn't weathered stil had the stain and looked really good. This is the original stain untouched by me
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170813/dd456544afa61b8af594757abdc07a8b.jpg)

After spending a bit of time researching everything on the net about Sequoias including other resto threads and all the old catalogues
and restoring weathered redwood. I decided to go with a spirit based stain rather than an all in one stain/sealer as these tended to be really thick and not enhance the grain
I trialled 6 different colours before deciding on
Prooftint Maple by Feast and Watson
One light coat applied with a cloth is all it needed
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170813/d02c7570a8aee637bdbd5180e9fa8899.jpg)

And then a coat of outdoor furniture oil which really made the grain pop
Top door just has stain, bottom door has stain and oil in this pic
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170813/ffd8548a6c247a999a32f903b720425b.jpg)
Next was the hardware, I reused all the originals just removed the rust and touched up with flat black spray paint
The only thing I replaced was the axles which I upgraded to SS and the wheel hub caps
The kettle got the usual clean as well as the ash pan and wheels, just waiting on wheel inserts from Brian
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170813/52b5bc59ed0cee344b955f92b310b781.jpg)
Any way here she is all ready for service

F*cking beautiful, @Hogsy! What method did you use to restore the sheen to those wheels?

F*cking beautiful, @Hogsy! What method did you use to restore the sheen to those wheels?

I removed the white walls by tapping them out with a nail punch. The plastic was breaking down and powdery so I gave them a light sand and hit it with gloss white spray paint. Probably gave them 5 coats before it had a nice sealed finish
The wheels I just cleaned and sprayed with gloss black
Removing the white walls broke the lugs that fix them to the wheels, but a few dabs of silicon has them sitting tight on the wheels again

Thanks for all the positive comments guys , I really appreciate it! I wasn't sure whether to restore or just oil it up, but I'm glad I did and really enjoyed the process, as this is the first Sequoia seen on Aussie soil I like to think Ross Mcdonald put this together in someone's backyard back in 1980 and showed them how to use a kettle

There're was a few questions I had when doing the resto
First - What year did the Sequoias stop coming with the two rings on the side of the table? I noticed there were holes pre drilled at either end of the table in the same location to accommodate the lid holder. But not for the rings . The rings are visible in the 74 catalogue but not the 79 catalogue

Second- Was their a change in stain or timber on the Sequoias at some stage? I noticed in the  catalogue it describes the timber as Heirloom Redwood stained timber,I thought these were two different types of timber. This is a pic out of the 1971 catalogue
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170814/f4a75029150f992c34b7820368285e3f.jpg)

Looks like they were available in two different finishes too

First Harris beats me to the punch on the Seville Chariot... Now Hogsy beats me to the punch on the Sequoia!  :D
Really, really nice job Hogsy. It's beautiful.
You wrestled with the same question about what to apply as the final finish as I have been. Mine had been stained over the original finish by a previous owner. I could tell because there were several scars (gouges, burn marks, etc.) that had stain over them. But I really couldn't determine what the original finish looked like. After studying the old catalogues I decided that I wanted the natural finish instead of the red one. Yours looks very much like how I imagined I'd like to do mine, so I'll explore something similar.
I'm nearly finished restoring mine. Basically, just the final finish on the wood and then re-assembly.
Again, nice job!

Thanks @Dale Benson , yes deciding on the finish was definitely the most frustrating part, all my internals(inside doors, shelf) still had the original stain in tact. So at least I had something to go off.
Looking forward to seeing yours finished. Sure was a fun project, just need to get a cover now
