Title: "Patina" Appreciation society - Weathered Warriors
Post by: Cellar2ful on March 12, 2017, 10:54:36 PM

The inspiration for this thread came from some recent posts of kettles that have gone way beyond "faded black" status. These are the kettles that have suffered so much porcelain degredation, there is bare metal showing through. Some even have the look of being made of copper like @WNC kettle. This little 18" I have named Robigus, the Roman God of rust. Let's see some of the other weathered warriors that have earned the "patina" badge of honor. Credit to @56MPG for the weathered warrior term.

@zavod44 has plenty more of this one, but I just had to get "Grandpa" on the page - the original Weathered Warrior.

@charred, let's see that one you picked up in NH.  I'm glad you picked it up, it had been sitting on CL for weeks.  Love to see some decent shots of it

out of the world

great idea

I was putting a enclosed ash catcher on my 18 inch silver today and my wife comes out and ask what happened to the lod rusty green I had, I had to admit the bottom bowl was about to collapse and I tossed it. She freaked out saying it was the one that turned out the best tasting food. Oh well, looks are not for everyone I guess.

My 1977 faded black all cleaned up & showing a little patina. Not quite as weathered as others here.. but aging gracefully.

The top has more fade than the bottom

Who knows what dribbled there and prevented the fading. Some scratches and other marks.

Another view.

It's still my main cooker!

THAT, in fact, is a confirmed Seville sighting my friend!  I did a few more drive-by's today and it has been pretty neglected. I've never done a cold call for a rescue, is there any sort of protocol that anyone can pass along for a price/trade and an ice-breaker? I would greatly appreciate any sort of advice.

Looking back at our first meetup we had as a club in May of 2013, I recalled @zavod44 brought a MLH Mothership that is the definition of a WW. (Or maybe it was Gummi's?)  If Grandpa is WWI,  the one in this shot certainly qualifies as WWII. Whoever has it now, let's see some other shots of this one!

@bertl...he found this grill last year before we had even discussed making your pans.  He didn't get a pan for it.  I forgot to even mention it to him, but I know he wouldn't spend the money on it anyways .

I have had this for over a year now and never cooked on it, picked it up for $5. One of the grate tabs is rusted through so I didn't think it'd be any good to cook on and basically forgot about it but after seeing this thread I'm going to clean it up a give it a go. Thanks once again for this inspiration.

Well I am official now.  Just picked up a patent pending kettle. If I am correct it would be around a 1970 because of the rubber wheels. Thought I would post in the patina appreciation thread because I plan to keep it that way.

Any tips to keep the rust front from advancing without hurting the patina look?(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170528/b30545a4a825a225e7a3d94bed7007df.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170528/4a2843478ae9cdd875e08a758bc213bf.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170528/cb9b7097abb1264f54fbac99c5d4cc0d.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170528/c7c962b120c9ae6c6d45a3771a953c74.jpg)

Backstory: about six months ago I aquired this beauty from @AZRaptor .
It has sat in my garage ever since. Today I was cleaning grills and decided to get this thing ready for a turn in the rotation.
I used some #0000 steel wool to remove some old paint splatters, and scraped the bowl with a razor blade.

I decided to start a fresh coating of gunk with some jalapeno poppers:

They turned out pretty good:

Some elk/bacon burgers came next:

Not bad for $17. Got some work ahead of me. No charcoal grate. New thin, flimsy cooking grate. Bowl is caked in grime. However, vents are in great shape and move freely. I will start a new thread, but any thoughts on age?

Big bowl vent tabs, all plastic wheels w/snap-in whitewalls,
1977-1980.
I gotta see the lid vent to narrow it down from there.

Scored one of these the night before the StL meetup (literally on my way to @jeffrackmo's house) my mother-in-law of all people rescued it for me from her neighbor's trash.  A code MBH.  Not much of a Patina yet, but a beautiful color!  My next project is to leave my old school roti ring in the sun as much as possible to try and match @Mr.CPHo's amazing looking weather warrior roti ring!

The sun has really taken its toll on these wheels. Pix are from Feb 2016 when I lost my mind and tried to give it away here.

Glad I still have it, but now I need to fix the leg sockets and such.

Purchased new by my dad in '75.

Oddly enough, I was working on my first restore of a weathered warrior tonight.  I fought with a stubborn leg stuck in socket.  The previous owner had assembled the grill wrong.  The handles were pointed sideways rather than straight /parallel with the front leg.  Copious amounts of liquid wrench and MANY hammer whacks later, it broke free.

It’s an A code I got for $30 on CL.  Now I just have lots of cleaning to do!   Might need a new charcoal grate and wheels.

@zavod44 has plenty more of this one, but I just had to get "Grandpa" on the page - the original Weathered Warrior.

If you look at Grandpa a certain way, it looks grumpy.

It not only looks "grumpy" it looks like Mr Zavod himself from a certain angle. I cooked on Grandpa once so can truly appreciate that beat baby.......they really do not "make them like they used to".

@Grillagin  - Can't get any closer without overlapping. Must have have been produced on a Monday. The A180 engraved in the porcelain is probably from the "Operation ID" crime prevention program in the 70's & 80's.

@Cellar2ful, That's what I was thinking.  And yep, the seller's DL# is etched into the lid.  I remember when that was the thing to do.

Interesting. My dad’s tools and some of his other items (pocket knife, leatherman, etc.) all have his DL engraved into them. Some are even his old number from the early 1970’s (before California added a few numerical digits).

Seriously?!?!  A driver license number etched into the lid?
With the help of @CatskillSmoker, my brother was able to grab this 18" for me. The legs are on wrong but I may leave it that way since it has probably been like that since first assembled.

Hello everyone I have found a new grail and I do not want to withhold it from you. It is a 1963 Wood Dale Kettle Hard to believe that I have found such an old kettle in Germany. Here is the story ... The owner got him 25 years ago from a GI stationed near mainz. At that time the grill was already 30 years old and had no more wheels. The new owner has him mounted on a car and legs and triangel painted ... For whatever reason He barbecued it for 25 years and he was always out in the open. That's why he's a weather warrior too I restored it as well as I could. The original triangel will be restored, original wheels I will probably not get Here are some pictures....

Picked this beauty up the other day. Slightly off center welded lid handle I think adds to the magic. Anyone have a rusty 22” triangle laying around? I love this thread, was wondering if anyone has any experience “adding patina” to a grill and wanted to share that experience!

Has the frame for a sidekick table, and the wire coal divider things.
Now I just need to fabricate a new cutting board.

I will post some more pics after I get it cleaned up.

Edit: patent pending, with plastic tire tread. So 72-74?

It has really nice wheels for as weathered as it is, legs and triangle are really good too. Might have to cut a grate strap out of another 18 and weld it in there.

My WW brothers.  A code 22 and newly cleaned up ‘78 18.  18 has an interesting off center handle.
(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190802/af00ed857b016db9c3199aefd759f252.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190802/4e9ef89ab74e59b096d40c3564277ebe.jpg)
The 18 had dried latex paint on the lid.  You can see it now in the black splotches near the handle and the side pictured below.  The spill was obviously before the patina set in.  I was surprised I find perfect black underneath paint.  (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190802/531c1de3064167478fe27d2ebda137f8.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190802/4de6a248c42b9d90dcc6b7bab1ca2594.jpg)

this is a patent pending that I drove 4 hours for one way and I just threw it right up in the barn. The lid is inside of it. I plan on doing something to it one day. The same with this 77 red next to it. I believe this was the first year that the lower bottom vent tabs became bigger the upper vent tab I believe it's still a little

Hey all! I'm new to the forum and another member from my introduction post recommended I post my 22" MBH weathered find here, came from my aunt's house. Through the age identification page, I was able to peg it as a 1975 model. Thought it was gray until I saw this thread. I just read through every post from #1 to here. Just picked it up last night. I was going to try and get the surface rust off but now I realize it's probably bare metal and it used to be black. I can appreciate the patina so maybe I'll just clean it up a bit and leave it as is. I am missing 1 of the 3 bowl vents and the ash catcher and the other two bowl vents rivets rusted off, but I do have them still. Any recommendations for reattaching them and or finding a tray and one double tab bowl vent?

Thanks!!

A nut and a bolt is what most people use.  I'm guessing most would use stainless, just to avoid more rust.

I'm lichen the lid handle on your WW @Uknow .  Great patina on that kettle.  As PotsieWeber mentioned above the bowl vents can be reattached using stainless steel bolts, nuts and lock washers.  I usually install them with the bolt head to the inside of the bowl.  Easier to clean the ashes from the bowl that way. Got you covered on sourcing a bowl vent.  PM sent.

My $40 find today.
What do you put on the patina to get it to shine? Seems like oil would darken the grey. I swear I read somewhere someone uses pickle juice or something but that could have been in a dream..

I've been hunting for a grill with some patina for awhile. Spotted this 77 locally and picked it up yesterday. Did a quick clean up and handle restore. Then went crazy with the camera. Later, cooked up some Usingers Italian sausage, man they were good!

Nice find. She’s a beauty! The kettle you referenced is sort of unique. I can tell you that if you try and oil yours it will get darker...and look much different than the one you referenced.

My faded out PP got some oil on a part of the bowl handle and it’s super dark. Not Jet Black...but different than what you’re trying to do. You could test a small spot and see. Oil will eventually burn off.

I'll never understand how the fade works
This guy's lid, handles, and sockets weathered slower than bowl. I have seen the lid be different but never noticed the handles and sockets so different than the main bowl.

Got this 18” WW from WKC member @dwnthehatch this past weekend.  We are thinking ’69 -‘70?

Got the bottom vents freed up and decided to do a little burn off tonight.  Hasn’t been fired up for at least 5 years and who knows before that.  The legs are on caddy wampus, which I’m hoping to correct, but one of the sockets has one maybe two welds that have rusted through.  So it may stay that way.  Will need to get some new grates and do some more RR, but it’s in pretty great shape for a +50 year old!

Looking forward to continuing to clean this old guy up and get it in the rotation.  I’ll get some new pics once we make a little more progress.

Cheers!

Got my old gray fix up finished this weekend!  Legs are on correct now. Had to reattach a socket in the process with some SS hardware, but it’s very solid now.  Cleaned everything up nice, but not too nice [emoji6].  Added a @zavod44 custom cherry handle and we’re ready to cook on it for the next +50 years!
