Title: Weber 22.5" Grate
Post by: SmoothSmoke on April 08, 2013, 07:15:28 AM
Does Weber sell a true 22.5" cooking grate that does not come with the handles.  I know they have the lower grate off of a 22" WSM that does not include the handles, but that is only like 21".

Yeah, that may be the ticket.  I'll just leave them on if I have to.  I'm thinking I may have enough dome clearance.

Related question:  What's the best way to stack two grates, without using cans, bricks etc.?  I want to attach something permanently to the upper grate.

That's what I'm getting at.  I need something that attaches both grates.  Whatever attaches the two, the part that attaches the upper grate would be permanent, but the lower part would be removable.   Just dont know how to rig it up???

Yeah, that's the ticket.  I just want to be able to attach the top level when ever I need, without having to mess with assembling the posts that hold it each time.

What are you using to connect the two grates?

Thanks!!!!

How about this, Smooth? it's 21.75" dia. I don't think the charcoal grates are coated so make sure it's well seasoned.

4 inch x 1/2 inch SS bolts , round head with two nuts. You could use washers in between the nuts but depending on the spacing of your grill bars it may not be needed

Thanks!  Do you think 4" would give me enough clearance for bigger pork butt

Just did this today on my second wsm 6 inch bolts on top rack 4 inch on bottom.  Depends on how tall you boston but is. I can fit 3lb hams 10 per grate with this setup no problems.

The 26 in kettle charcoal grate is the same size as the 22 in cooking grate. I have been using an old rusted 22 in cooking grate (not with the flip up sides) perpendicular to the charcoal grate so smaller pieces of lump don't fall through.

Im thinking 5" will work.  The second nut can lower if need be.  Just not sure if that nut can support a top grate with over 30 pounds of food on it.

I use 2 fender washers with grate in between a lock washer and a nut on one end. I use 1 nut 1 fender washer 1 lock washer and 1 nut on other with grill on top supports 40lbs +.

Dang!  I bought some 5"x 1/2" bolts, but the suckers wont fit through the grates....too thick.  I need to go 1 or 2 sizes smaller.

Flip the grate upside down so the handles are down?

I thought of that, but I think I'm just going to have to buy a lower grate off of a 22" WSM, those come handleless.  Might run a pretty penny though.

Worked with 3/8" x 5.5" bolts!!

Smooth, the lower 22.5" wsm grate is smaller than the top. I suspect it's the 26" charcoal grate but nickel coated. If it will help, I can take a pic of it for you when I get home .

Yup you are rigght.  Its a tad smaller.  I had a few wsm's before.  I found a plaxe that sells it online for 20 plus 9 bucks shipping.  I kind of like that its smaller now because of dome clearancw space. Thanks PBE
