I love this little grill, and the fact that @Dale Benson gifted it to @jcnaz who subsequently gifted it to me makes it even more special. When I was living in NORCAL, I sent JC the hooks for him to rebuild the ash pan, not knowing that I would eventually move 10 miles away from him and end up with the 49er in my hands!

I can't tell what makes a wood dale a wood dale and I couldn't figure it out by researching this site either. How do you identify a wood dale?

The vent will be stamped with the WOOD DALE, ILL. city name. There MAY have been some early non-stamped vents for kettles made in Wood Dale after the move from Chicago, but it's hard to verify.

The vent-code cheat-sheet is a work in progress, but this version is close to final. Handy to have a copy in the glovebox for those sudden curb-alert finds.

For those wondering, the very first tabs were welded onto the vent as a separate piece. After that, the tab was stamped out with the vent itself. Note the shape of the vent tab also changes, and I need to update the chart to reflect the reality that WOOD DALE vents are square - at least some are. @Craig would know for sure what years went with what tab style, but we keep learning new stuff as some of the old kettles resurface.

Fantastic dude! I've only seen one in the flesh and it's not for sale. One of my customers owns it and it was his dad's so it's right where it belongs. And he uses it exclusively for ribs. Great score!

Dang, I had one of these "DEMO" units YEARS ago... my first Weber ever, gifted to me by a friend in Palatine, Ill. Wish I still had the beast... cooked some grate meals on it! Mine was gray in color...

I joined the mob in 2017. 1st with the Easterner and then I added the Estate. Estate is transition kettle with porcelain bottomed ashpan with clips and handles with holes top and bottom. Hello everyone I have found a new grail and I do not want to withhold it from you. It is a 1963 Wood Dale Kettle Hard to believe that I have found such an old kettle in Germany. Here is the story ... The owner got him 25 years ago from a GI stationed near mainz. At that time the grill was already 30 years old and had no more wheels. The new owner has him mounted on a car and legs and triangel painted ... For whatever reason He barbecued it for 25 years and he was always out in the open. That's why he's a weather warrior too I restored it as well as I could. The original triangel will be restored, original wheels I will probably not get Here are some pictures....

Frankly, the only things I can see to really knock this grill is that I doubt it was intended or made to stand up to actual use and that there are some scratches that mar the surface in close ups. I'm also guessing many were disappointed with having believed that it had been done "aftermarket." If you think about it, even if you didn't run across someone at Weber who remembered this, it makes sense that George would do something like this. Think of him pictures in some ads in a tuxedo with tails with a red grill. Kind of makes sense that he'd have some plated in gold & have one in the lobby, when I'm guessing he made plenty of gold from the grills.
However, neither are really that big a deal and I think it is amazing that it survived being in a barn for so long & that I'm guessing nobody cooked the hell out of it, which I'm guessing would ruin the finish. Cool that it is so old & in such good shape. Also, I bet that SOMEWHERE, there is a picture of George Stephens with it in the lobby at Weber. Even just a picture of it in the lobby at Weber would be so cool.
