Title: Bisbee has gas!
Post by: Winz on June 11, 2016, 05:22:35 PM
I think Gen 1 Performers are some of the best kettles Weber has ever produced.  Quality materials and a great design.  That said, I ditched by charcoal bin a long time ago and got rid of the small propane tank as well.  I just don't like the tank hanging down in the front of the kettle.  For quite some time now, I have been using lighter cubes with Bisbee - which is kind of lame given the propane starter is one of the performer's best features.  Time for a new mod!

I started by ordering the gas regulator, piezo starter, and burner tube for a Gen 3 performer.  I wanted the spin on gas bottle feature.  To make it work with my Gen 1 performer, and to position the propane bottle in a horizontal position, I had to fabricate some brackets:

I leave my Slow N Sear in the kettle 90% of the time.  For the burner tube, I copied the idea that @ed3120 and @pbe gummi bear have pioneered - positioning the ignitor to the right of the mounting bracket.  This allows you to focus the flame right under the fuel when using the SNS.

Here you can see the basket I installed where the charcoal bin use to be.  Very handy storage.  I positioned the regulator so the tank would mount parallel to the basket.

The piezo ignitor mounted nicely next to the regulator.  Both the gas adjustment knob and the ignitor button have enough clearance to fit underneath the flip up table when it is closed.

The tip of the tube sits under the SNS perfectly

All rigged up!

Much better - Bisbee now has gas, but no tanks hanging down in front.  The basket and new gas system are pretty simple mods, but provide some good functionality.  I like the piezo ignitor - it is a nice upgrade over the stock Gen 1 unit.

How bad did Weber nail you for the regulator assembly?  I have a SS Performer and one of the twin table OTP's I've been meaning to add new regulators/gas assist to

I usually buy stuff like this through ereplacement parts instead of Weber. I think it was around $30

Me Likee! It's got me wondering if I could mod my new performer to hide the gas bottle!

Man that mounting of the propane tank is nice.  I didnt think it could be done sideways....now you have me thinking.

I've done similar, but with a twist.  I rotate the burner tube 180 so the igniter is mounted up rather than down.  I think it protects the igniter better and also allows the wires to be dressed nicer and out of the way.

So, are there any issues with mounting the propane tank sideways???  I though there would be which is why i didnt do it that way in  the first place.

You think if there isnt, then Weber wouldve mounted them like this from the beginning

I need to replace the burner tube on my latest SSP acquisition.  Its an EE Code red head.  Is that the same burner tube from a new Gen of the performer?

I gotsta git me one o' them!!!  The old one works but is quite rusty and the flame is a lazy yellow rather than Blue like my Black SSP....

Nice Mod!!!

The burner tube is the same for all gas-assist Performers. The regulator for the SSP is different than the Gen2 and all later Performers (which are all interchangeable, I believe.)

Thank @haeffb.   I did order a new one from ereplacement.  The regulator is good.  Just the tube is all wonky...  didnt mean to hijack...  and now back your regularly scheduled discussion...
