Title: Best commercial bbq sauce - other than Sweet Baby Ray's
Post by: AZ Monsoon on January 20, 2016, 05:12:07 PM
I've been a fan of Sweet Baby Ray's for a while but have recently grown tired of it. What are your favorite commercial alternatives? I can make my own I guess, but would rather not. Thanks!

1st off, I tend to buy the bbq sauce with no HFCS. Kraft makes 2 cheap sauces and one says no HFCS. Awesome. I buy weber sauce when I can get it on sale.  Kc masterpiece has a 25th anniversary bottle that is real good. I do make mine own, but I do buy the bottles.

My go-to bottled BBQ sauce is the K.C. Masterpiece that they sell at Costco.  No hfcs and a great price. It is a pretty good sauce by itself, and a great place to start if you like to customize.

I also avoid high fructose corn syrup. I really like Bullseye BBQ sauce by Kraft. It's pretty thick so depending on what I'm using it with (especially something like pulled pork) I'll thin it with apple cider vinegar. I'm also a fan of KC Masterpiece.

I'm trying all flavors of Sweet Baby Ray's. so far hot & spicy is my favorite, but there are several good ones...they even have some good wing sauces

The best bottled I've found is World Harbors Sticky Rum. That being said, it is getting really hard to find now.

We definitely try to avoid HFCS as much as possible, as well. I am a big fan of Weber's sauces… and the lack of HFCS is one of the reasons why.

I found this sauce about seven years ago and never looked back. I am NOT a fan of sweet baby rays. Everyone in town uses it as their wing sauce. Over kill

I have also tried for years to find line of BBQ sauces better than SBRs.   There has only been one company that really impressed me with their entire line, and makes our guests say "Wow! What kind of sauce is that?!"

KC Masterpiece and Weber's when I use sauce, when I make my sauce I use KC Masterpiece as the base.

Sweet Baby Rays is like the Budweiser of BBQ sauce :P
People like it just because its there and its what they are used to.

Need to try more to find what one I REALLY like, but for now Stubbs is on hand and not bad.

This is my number one, go to sauce.

Rufus Teague is pretty good too. The Touch O' Heat has anchovie paste in it....brilliant....I add a little cider vinegar and Tiger Sauce to improve it though. The Pappy's needs no doctoring.

Thoughts on Good Ol JRs?  My son got me a couple bottles recently, because he's not only a chip off the ol block grill-wise, but also because we're both amused by pro rasslin and other goofy stuff.

I also try to avoid anything with HFCS. The only time I use sauce is on ribs and I use Stubb's

+1 for Stubb's.

Though I've been having fun making my own.  You can find a base recipe almost anywhere, then start adding and subtracting per your personal tastes.  My favorite creation right now is a peach habanero sauce.

Weber's brand BBQ sauce (NO HFCS crap in it) is a go to for me, also like a few local ones too, Dougies, Cookies. I grew up on KC Masterpiece and Bullseye. Back in the 80s and 90s those and Cookies were all you could find around here.

it has hfcs, but, aside from home made it's the best I've had.

My go to is Jack Daniels spicy, but knowing my luck that probably has HFCS in it.  I do like the KC Masterpiece original, too, though.

My wife is really into no High Fructose Corn Syrup sauces. One of the best ones we've found is Voodoo Pig Sauce. Awesome on wings and pork. You can find it in some stores.

***Now just fair warning! My wife sells "Tastefully Simple" and it seems like every time I find something I like the next time I want it its out of season or discontinued. So that's my fair warning ;). As of today its still on their site.

Not trying to get into war with anyone.  But, last summer the Mayo clinic said this, "At this time, there's insufficient evidence to say that high-fructose corn syrup is any less healthy than other types of sweeteners."

With all of the back and forth about coffee, butter, alcohol, and who know what else, I don't put much stock the HFCS scare.  I do try to keep my overall sugar intake fairly low.  I drink my coffee black, my Coke Diet, and my scotch only with ice and a little water (it's called a Bin Laden).

I use honey, turbinado, and pure maple when I can, but also like Blues Hog Original and Tennessee Red, which both contain HFCS, though it is way down on the ingredient list.

True.  Sugar is sugar.  My issue with it is that it's a cheap substitute for the real thing - more of a filler.  I'd rather use a product that uses the best ingredients possible.

Sounds like you know your sauces. I haven't tried thinning the RT like that but will. It might've been just too much honey, but the wife said the St. Louis ribs were a little too sweet last smoke. I've seen the Pappy's at Kroger so will see if they still have it. Thanks for the tip.

For pulled pork sammiches something to try is about a 50/50 mix of Stubb's original and a good Carolina Mustard sauce. (And a bit of a good coleslaw, of course.) Not much to it if you can't find a mustard sauce in the stores near you.

I often use Chris Lilly's loin back rib recipe that's in the Southern Living big BBQ book. I think it's called "pineapple apricot sweet ribs". Anyhow, since LAMBERT'S SWEET SAUCE O' MINE has apricot in it, no surprise that it works great with those ribs. They're foiled with a little mixture of apricot nectar, pineapple juice, rub, and minced garlic. Very good recipe and the garlic and fruit flavors balance out the sweetness.

@21 I understand -and agree.

I'm just saying that if there is a product that, otherwise, I happen to enjoy (Like Blues Hog) I'm not going to turn it away simply because the ketchup they use contains some HFCS.

I am also just a little frustrated with all the various "scares" that are out their along with their respective bandwagoners.

I do like Sweet Baby Rays.  In the Carolinas and maybe some others we have Johnboy and Billy Sauces in which I love.  Other than those my wife's family loves me cooking with Carolina Treat sauce as well.

Yeah, @Slicer021, Carolina Treat in great stuff.  I won an Anything But with wings marinated in it.

I always keep a bottle in the cabinet, right next to a bottle of Scott's.
