Title: You guys are a bad influence
Post by: ABCbarbecue on January 06, 2016, 09:34:57 AM
I'm actually thinking about getting this:

https://charlotte.craigslist.org/app/5386954082.html

Is this a good find?  Would it fit in a new performer deluxe table?  I think it'd be cool to have a redhead in a performer.

It would take some finagling to get a standard kettle in a performer, esp if you want gas assist.  Still $25 for this Red head is a sweet deal.

I see a better option in your area!

$45 SS performer (https://offerupnow.com/item/detail/68049170/weber-grill)

Kind of a weird performer though....wheels are on the wrong end of it!

@Troy -  Haha -  The WHEEELEE mod!  I love it.

Just add the casters and it would actually make it easy to push around on all fours instead of having to drag it from the handle side when setup properly.

Dude you HAVE to get that. That's a sweet redhead for $25 bucks.

You have 3 options for getting into the performer frame.
- let it sit on the handles
- make some brackets like this (https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5697/20732623733_7e430471eb_c.jpg)
- cut the old brackets off a donor performer bowl

Here is another redhead from offerupnow in your general area.  I little more expensive but it appears to have a fade and looks to be in better shape.  Might be worth offering $30-$35 and see what happens.

When a color isn't quite the same throughout the grill.  Usually gets darker around the lip of the lid.  Some kettle have a fade you can see all of the time, but some just fade or change shade when they are hot.  My 96 SS Performer for example has an even tone of red that gets much darker when its hot.

Ah I see now what you're talking about.  So this fade is a good thing?  Why?

They are just harder to find.  I'm really not even sure what causes a kettle that always has a fade.  It think the ones that fade when hot are due to minerals or elements in the paints that weber used.  I believe there was something in the red paint that is either really expensive, hard to find, or illegal now which is why there haven't been red kettles for a while.  I might be totally wrong about the lack of recent kettles in red, but I think I read it somewhere on here and if I am remembering correctly it was @Troy that mentioned it.

You can add a gas assist to a bowl if you are handing with a dremel and drill. I've added them before and did a write up on it. Red kettle would look sweet on your SNS cooks.  :)

If you consider the redheads collectible, though, isn't a little extra money worth it?  Or is it all part of the hunt?  The goal is to find a collectible kettle that someone is selling cheap because they don't know what they have: ;)

@ABCbarbecue, I met with the lady yesterday and brought the grill home.  We had talked on Monday and she held it for me with out me even asking until I had time to see it.  The bowl is solid which is why I was interested, but its far from perfect.  It's egg shaped so I will have to work on it just to get a lid to fit on it.

I'm not sure why she didn't respond to you though.

I've had offerup people get back to me a week later sometimes....so it isn't a lost cause yet.  And I got my 26er and my gas kettle on offer up.  Have only bought one grill via CL.  I think OfferUp is easier and the sellers tend to want to do quick deals and be done with it.

Lol!!!!

Sometimes you hit dead ends.  I've only hit one so far on offerup.

Funny story the guy I bought my 26er from on Offerup sent me a text this morning.  When he dropped off the grill at my place I had just smoked a pork belly the day before so I gave him a small slab of it.  He sent me a text this morning saying he had cooked some bacon from his butcher this morning and his wife said the pork belly I made was the best bacon she had ever had.

So it's not a cheap backyard bargain, but I did find this Crimson red performer deluxe online, which is surprising as I didn't think they were making red anymore.  What do you guys think of the Crimson Red (http://www.acmetools.com/shop/tools/weber-15503001-performer-deluxe-charcoal-grill-22-inch?cm_mmc=Google-_-PRODUCTFEED-_-WEBER-_-15503001&CAWELAID=600009240000668516&CAGPSPN=pla&catargetid=600009240000704084&cadevice=c&gclid=CjwKEAiAzuK0BRCW4tiLpJT-8TISJADV8cw9QINU8nunK5UaewtgRhLNJc2w5RTFGhuX81cQif1eARoCSZjw_wcB)?

It's free shipping and no tax, so that's a bit of a discount I suppose.

Not a bad deal. It is the same price as current colors on Amazon.  The only Crimson on Amazon is a good chunk more money.

I have a regular crimson OTG and I like it because it is not your standard black (and for some reason I feel the need to get all the colors), but the color does not "pop" like the blue or standout like the copper.

Ace also sells the crimson.

I always wince a little when someone asks what WE "think" about a certain color. Opinions are fun, but if you like it nothing else matters.

Here's the deal. Weber non-blacks have mostly been matte (not bright/glossy) colors in recent years. If you go to any of the European Weber sites you'll see these (albeit in yet different colors.)

The Crimson Red was last year's or maybe 2014? I forget. For unused machines, the only exception I'm aware of that's not black/copper/green (available anywhere) is the blue sold by Crate and Barrel: http://www.crateandbarrel.com/weber-blue-performer-deluxe-charcoal-grill/s379523

If you like a color you could buy the bowl and lid from Weber and use it with any Craigslist Performer. Some older or discontinued bowl and lid colors might still be available from Weber as parts.

Reds Rule, @ABCbarbecue the Crimson Performer you found is most likely 2014 (says SS grate) the 2015 performers have Gourmet Barbecue System grate. (opinions on GBS inserts vary)

I believe the stainless grate will holdup better with the high heat your Slow n Sear is capable of producing.

@ABCbarbecue -  I guess SNS sales have gone up if you are looking at a brand new grill now!  If you want to spend the money on a new one then go for it.  I prefer to wait around for good CL or Offerup deals.  Having a new one that will be under warranty is never a bad thing.

I have to agree (on all points.)

Someone here could verify SS grate but being the Deluxe model I'm confident in the description. That is the only difference I would know by glance.

-If I hadn't picked up a Mostly restored Red "EZ" SSP back in 9/2015 I would've jumped on that link already.

Of course now I'm wondering if I should go green to match my BGE (which I'm also working on an accessory for).... or maybe I should go black to match my 26" kettle.  Ugh.

I wonder if you can contact weber about making you a custom kettle with your logo on the lid?  It would be interesting to see how much they would charge for that if they would even do it at all.  Might be able to get them to give a deal if you also out the weber logo on the lid as well so you can promote them as you are promoting your products.

Colors are likely different (not the distinction intended, perhaps)
~the Weber green won't be the same tint as BGE, etc.

Not a bad idea.  You know it's really hard to market a product that hides itself in another product.  If someone looks at the Slow 'N Sear by itself they have no idea what it does.  If they look at it in a grill many times they don't even notice it.   :(

Right, if you have logo etched then filled in with contrasting High temp paint. Etching a distinct logo (curved surface) will be challenging tho...

Thanks!  I like the color and I prefer having a SS hinged grate over the new plated gourmet system.  I would not get the accessories and the center falling out all the time would get on my nerves.

It comes with the gourmet grate system standard

My understanding is that this comes with the SS hinged grate.  That's what the description said as well.

Pulled this off amazon. Same part number. To my knowledge all current performer deluxe models come with the gourmet bbq system. It is hinged on each side but does have the removable grate in the middle .

It would not surprise me either way.  If it does come with the gourmet system I'll complain and make sure they get their storefront updated.  I'll let everyone know either way.

It's a great grill. You'll love it, the gourmet system isn't really a pain. Either way great choice, love the color

I may be COMPLETELY wrong on this... (and I am sure someone here can correct me)

But didn't the SS table start with the 2015s? I know when I was looking for one at the end of last year it was new model with SS table and gourmet system, or last years model with plastic table and no gourmet.

I can't imagine having issues with the center piece falling out during cooking though. I guess when moving the grate out of the way you would have to move the centerpiece so it doesn't fall out... But it fits in place pretty damn sturdy.

Well the product description says it has the SS grate.  We'll see.

"Get the rich taste of charcoal grilling with some of the convenience of gas with the Weber® Performer® Deluxe Charcoal Grill 22-inch in crimson. The stainless steel 22-inch grate provides 363-square inches of cooking space for feeding a family or a big party"

I think it'd be win win if it has the metal table and SS hinged grate.

I think it's probably unlikely that Weber does two versions of the performer deluxe in Crimson, one with a ss hinged grate and one with the gourmet system IMO. I imagine the gourmet system is a a selling point for most people buying the king of the hill charcoal grill.

Let's just face it  @ABCbarbecue,  U wanted the top-of-the-line and now U got the top-of-the-line  ...  U lucky kettleHead.    Course you can always by an extra grilling grate for your NEW beautiful Crimson Weber Performer Deluxe, they only cost about $20 bucks in Home Despot, U can swap between the two until you buy a WoK :)                         SJ

lol, yes yes first world problems.  I have an SS grate I can pull off one of my other kettles anyway.  Who knows, maybe I'll actually like the gourmet system (tho I'm skeptical). 8)

I was too, but it really is fine. The center piece stays put pretty well

Just got the gourmet grate about a month ago and I love it.  As long as you are leaning your grate against something when its off of the grill and not at a total veritacal it the center stays on just fine.  I love being able to take the center out when I use my vortex and now that I have the SNS, I'm thinking I might remove the center if I do a beer can chicken so I can put the chicken on the coal grate and still have a cooking grate surrounding the chicken to cook other items on while the chichken is going.

That's not a bad idea.

Well the grill arrived last night.  I haven't taken it out of the box yet but the picture on the side clearly shows the BBQ Gourmet System.  I guess I'll be figuring out how much I like it.

Can't find the link but I bought a handle with a little L-shape end to lift out my center when it's hot, like if I forgot to put a drip pan beneath or want to light the smaller Weber chimney without removing the main grate. I hook the center on one of the metal hooks my SS Performer has.

But if you have welding or other heat gloves you'll see you can just push down on a corner and it'll flip up enough to grab if it's hot.

I've got a grate tool that should work really well.  I better get my butt in gear and put the thing together.  Been a busy day.

Got the grill assembled yesterday and she's a beauty.

Just assembled, but forgot to put the timer in:

Five minutes later...

I'm not sure I'll ever use the Gourmet Grate.  The circle in the middle is annoying and the grates are too thick.

If you lived in Eugene, I'd direct swap you for my NIB 22.5" hinged cooking grate :)                          SJ

The gourmet grate is great for what it's intended for (accessories), and when using the vortex.

Yeah I could definitely see using it with the Vortex.

Heard back from ACME Tools regarding the incorrect information on their Weber Performer Product Page.  They apologized and have ordered an SS grate for me.  They're also having the description corrected.  Great job all around on their part.  Quick shipping and great post purchase customer service.  Same way we run ABC.
