Title: Vintage Kettle Questions
Post by: G on December 22, 2012, 03:52:55 AM
I enjoy looking at the old Weber catalogs and was thumbing through the 64, 68, 72, and 73 catalogs and looking at the Weber 50 year timeline and got to thinking:
1) How come we dont see more "Customs"?  It was introduced in 1969 which is some time ago but several people own pre-70s kettles.
2) Has anyone seen (or own) an actual 18" Galley-Cue?  This is in the 1972 catalog and should be more prevalent for the same reasoning above.
3) When was yellow introduced as a color?  The 73 catalog says the yellow kettle was "new this year", yet the timeline shows a yellow Ranger in 1965.  Was that the year yellow 18 and 22 kettles came out?

Any thoughts?

I just don't think The Meat grill was very popular and they didn't sell many. Never seen the 18 galley, but I bet there were a few of those sold. On the yellow, I guess they just reintroduced it after doing away with the ranger.

Yellow was an off and on color with Weber. A yellow 22.5" was available in 1962 with a metal lid handle that looks to be a lighter "banana cream" yellow. But it could be the lighting they used on that photoshoot of the '62 catalog. Of course the '65 Ranger was yellow, but havn't seen any yellow standard kettles after 1962 or before 1973. Weber must have kept the bright yellow kettles through 1978. I think the modern blue color replaced it around 1979. Just like I think dark green took over lime green that same time. As for the 1969 custom, it looks like it has roosters and lambs on it?  But I could be wrong :-\. I nicknamed that one the "Green Acres" kettle. Looks like a kettle that Sam Drucker's General Store would have sold in Hooterville. To Duke's point, whether it was meat or farm animals, it probably didnt sell well outside of rural areas.  As for the '73, 18 Galley Que, I agree that you'd think more would exsist, but they may not have sold as many of those, just like I'm guessing the Penthouse probably wasn't a big mover for Weber either, but that's just pure speculation on my part.

Here's the '69 as big as I could blow it up. It looks like a monotone version of the Copper Mist/Chocolate brown.

I own a copy of 1962,1963,1972,1973,(1988?), 1999-2013 catalogs.  There is 1968, 1969 on line.  I am sure there are others out there (like the 1964 mentioned above), is there a place where all these are listed in order and can be looked at page by page?

I can scan and save mine to a flash drive and mail it to someone who can post it, if it is not already done.

Plus I think the Weber time line is off.  It has the gas kettle introduced in 1971, but the 1972,1973 catalogs do not list it for sale.  In fact the 1973 catalog has Mike Kemster slowly uncovering what looks like the base of a gas kettle.  Kind of a teaser picture of what is to come.

I down loaded the the  '64, '72, '73 catalogs in a adobe format from another site. But I don't know how to put them on here.

I wonder how limited some of the production numbers on some of these obscure grills really are.

I have never seen grills such as the Fireplace, Flamenco, Penthouse, Wishing Well, Custom, Barrel Bar-B-Q, or 18" Galley Que OTHER than in the Weber Timeline or old brochures.

Has anyone else ever seen actual photos of any of these, OR any for sale anywhere?

I talked to an Ace store employee that refirbished a barrel-q. I tried to get the customers name, but no go.  They passed my name to the owner if they ever decide to sell.

I'd be ringing that Ace store and impersonate a Weber Employee
And explain that you've misplaced the customers details and need to contact them 8)

I imagine there is a Custom collecting dust in someones barn right now.  One will come up sooner or later.

Reillyranch - All those catalogs would be a great addition to this site.  I dont know how to do it but Im sure someone else does.  If they cant be posted here, you could probably make a few bucks by selling the complete set on disk.  Count me in for a copy.

Isn't there anyway to turn them into a PDF file, and then save them onto our site?  Sort of like the other site did?

Reilly and Husker. If you want to email me the digital files I have an idea on a way to get them on here.
I was thinking do one thread per catalog. I could get all the pages on the original post and then title the thread the date of the catalog. I have some time of coming up and would be willing to give it a shot.

The key is Reillyranch getting good scans.  If he can get good scansthen whoever gets them can post them .  Posting is easy, I'm sure Troy can do something....

Maybe if I can find a decent old metal handle black grill, I'll just paint it to look like the custom...All I need is some artwork of the chickens and cows or whatever they are....

It almost looks like the artwork of the chicken an cows are painted red in the shapes of the different cuts of meat or poultry. For all we know about this particular grill, it may have been a one of a kind order placed in 1969 for a guy in a place like Mason City, IA or Casper, WY or somewhere in the Midwest, or maybe down South. I would love to have seen some other "custom" kettles that Weber made that year, if any exist. Just imagine an avocado kettle with sunflowers painted on the lid, or a special white kettle with spades, clubs, diamonds, and hearts on it.  :D The "playing cards" kettle could be a red-fade to snow-white and back to red. Similar to the Westerner fade. That would have been cool!

Posting images in a thread may not be the best solution. There are typically limits to image size to prevent excess usage of storage space on a site as well as keeping page load time reasonable. I would want images big enough to easily read the text. Package them in a PDF that can be downloaded and that may be easier to achieve. It is easy to store the download locally so you don't use bandwidth every time you want to look at it (probably more a concern for the site then the user.)

I take it ReillyRanch is not local to the Chicago area. I have a decent scanner and would offer to help with that.

A while ago, way before WKC came into being, I sent someone at TVWBB the scans of 73,72,64,63 catalogs.  I went to office max and had them put it in a PDF files onto a flash drive.  I pit the flash drive in the mail and a few days later they posted it on their site. It was still there last time I checked.

The Finkfarm here has offered to do the same.  I just have to gather them up and bring them back to Office Max.  I think I will get a few CD's made to and can send them to whoever is interested.

It would be cool to get copies of all available catalogs into one place.

During our Christmas family dinner last year I showed the timeline to my dad and he lit up and said, "hey I used to have that one!"  He points at the custom. He shows it to mom and she's like, "yeah I remember that old thing, we threw it out.."  Happy Friday everyone!!

"I never said anything about putting them in a thread....."

Might as well.....

In addition to our own little individual covert activities / small group excursions / general perving
& the like, we're ALSO preserving American ( & obviously other countries' ) history.......

I've identified & saved off about 25 threads that go in-depth into figuring out the jigsaw puzzle that is Weber history.....some are about cleaning & restoration, also
Just waiting to see how we could proceed in deciphering fact from fiction & creating a truthful account..........

WKC, it's not just a job....It's an adventure !!!!!!!

I'm good with however, as long as the stuff gets preserved....the best way that could be shared around is all that much better !!!

And how come no one is doing it yet?

I think there's an easy way to post it as a retrievable

We all may be "that creepy guy down the street with all the Webers" to our neighbors but it's those same neighbors that eat the shit out of what we all turn out from our beloved kettles at block parties....just sayin.  ;) I love it when we do cookouts in our cul de sac and all my neighbors (whom I like and they are all nice people) roll up with there huge gassers and there fancy tools in a brief case when my redhead is all hot 'n ready to go and my tools hang off her lip. Then it invariably turns into a "I like charcoal, but just don't have time for it" says the one thats my age, another, the older guy says "I started with a Weber, then I moved up in the world" one of the ladies ask me chuckling "teee heee how many grills do you have, Craig!?" as she's munching on one of my burgers mind you, to which my Wife blurts "Amen!"  ::)  I love 'em all but they really piss me off sometimes. Ok, I get it, you have gas! I have charcoal, a lot of charcoals and thats that.  8)  And I like the flavor better. It makes cleaning my ashholes after a couple of cooks worth it. Someday soon, I'm gonna climb over that anticharcoal wall of my neighbor's and it's gonna be GLORIOUS!

PDF files? I think Troy can best answer that. I'm no IT guy, but I believe we are on a host server. I know there should be a way to store a file as PDF. It would be a link to in another holding spot. I have to download MSDS's sheets all the time and do research for specifications. I click the title and magically it opens a PDF file in a different window to scroll or print.

I definitely qualify as the creepy weber guy with everyone we know.  They all say they wish they had the time for charcoal, like I don't have shit to do but fire up charcoal all day waiting to dinner time. ::)  While the charcoal is lighting, I use the time to play catch, soccer, whatever with my kids.  Its worth every minute.

But when they come over they say things like "this is better than a restaurant" and "when my husband makes these they are really dry, I didn't know they could taste this good".  Score board!!
